Rick Spielman has a pair of coaching interviews lined up for Saturday in Carolina. Not only will the GM be speaking with 49ers OC Greg Roman, he will also be sitting down with Niners D-line coach Jim Tomsula.

We heard a couple days ago that the Vikings might be interested in Tomsula, and now we have confirmation.

Tomsula and Roman both have a chance to make the list of three finalists that will fly to Minnesota later this week for a follow-up interview with Zygi Wilf in attendance. Mike Zimmer and Todd Bowles are already believed to be on that list.

Zimmer and Bowles have plenty of free time with their teams out of the picture, but Tomsula and Roman would both be deeply involved in prep for the NFC title game this week should the 49ers get past Carolina.

Tomsula is a rarity among the Vikings’ head coach candidates in that he is not presently a coordinator. But he does have something going for him that Zimmer and Bowles don’t have: head coaching experience.

Tomsula was interim coach in San Francisco for one game in 2010 after Mike Singletary was fired. He also coached the World League’s Rhine Fire for a season.

For what that’s worth.
