Paul Guenther Won’t Be Coming to Minnesota With Mike Zimmer

Who will Mike Zimmer hire as defensive coordinator in Minnesota? It won’t be Paul Guenther. The linebackers coach will reportedly stay in Cincinnati and accept a promotion to defensive coordinator.

Speculation had been running pretty high that Guenther would follow Zimmer to Minnesota as DC, but the Bengals made a push to keep Guenther, who was also rumored to be on Washington’s radar screen to become DC under Jay Gruden.

If Guenther was indeed plan A for DC in Minnesota, then new head coach Zimmer will have to go to plan B. One name to stash in the back of your notebook: 49ers D-line coach Jim Tomsula, who was reportedly interviewed by the Vikings Saturday ahead of San Francisco’s playoff game with Carolina.

One guy I don’t think we’ll be seeing in the mix at DC is Alan Williams, who has been somewhat trashed by players in the wake of Leslie Frazier’s firing. I seriously doubt we’ll see any in-house options being considered at DC.

Mike Zimmer is likely going to clean house with this staff. And given the way things went the last couple years, I couldn’t blame him.
