Vikings Hire Dolphins LB Coach George Edwards as Defensive Coordinator

Mike Zimmer was officially introduced as Vikings head coach Wednesday afternoon, and he is wasting no time getting his staff together. Alex Marvez of Fox breaks the news that Zimmer will hire former Dolphins LB coach George Edwards to serve as defensive coordinator.

Zimmer and Edwards worked together for a short time in Dallas when Zimmer was DC and Edwards was LB coach. Edwards has served as a DC on three occasions, twice in the pros with Washington and Buffalo and once in college with Florida. He has also been a positional coach at various stops.

It had originally been rumored that Zimmer would bring his Cincinnati LB coach Paul Guenther along with him but the Bengals kept that from happening by giving Guenther a bump up to DC. Speculation then settled on 49ers D-Line coach Jim Tomsula, who interviewed with the Vikings last weekend.

But George Edwards is the man. Alan Williams now officially is gone as DC after two inconsistent years. Mike Zimmer is himself a renowned defensive coach and will be mainly responsible for devising the defensive scheme in Minnesota.
