With the important Senior Bowl milestone now behind us, the FanSided.com crew had unleashed another mock draft. This time they’ve changed it up for the Vikings and gone with a non-quarterback. Very outside-the-box. The selection this week is:

Anthony Barr, LB, UCLA!!!!!!

In keeping with current draft wonk parlance, Barr’s position should be listed as edge defender. In other words he’s a guy who fits potentially as a 4-3 DE or a 3-4 OLB and rushing the passer is his specialty.

Just from my own reading of things in recent days, it seems the enthusiasm for Barr has somewhat cooled after an early spike. He clearly has blazing speed as an edge rusher but there are concerns about his lack of technical development. We’re seeing Khalil Mack get a lot more attention due to his perceived versatility.

The knocks on Mack are largely character-related but that kind of thing won’t scare away Mike Zimmer, as evidenced by the work he did with Vontaze Burfict and Adam Jones.

Barr though is a big time talent and with polishing he could be a fantastic edge player. Zimmer’s work with Michael Johnson in Cincinnati is a point that will be raised over and over as we look at guys like Barr.

Barr would be an excellent acquisition if the Vikings don’t resign Everson Griffen and/or Jared Allen. However, I expect the Vikings to resign Griffen with all the cap room that they have. I also expect them to renegotiate Greenway’s contract as well
