Vikings Agree To 1-Year Deal With CB Derek Cox

The Vikings weren’t done working on the secondary on Thursday after they signed CB Captain Munnerlyn.

They have added former San Diego Chargers CB Derek Cox to the team.  Minnesota has agreed to a one year deal with him.

Cox stands 6’1″ tall and weighs in at 195 pounds.  He was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars back in 2009.  In his first game as an NFL player, he intercepted Peyton Manning and also recovered a fumble.  After his stint in Jacksonville, Cox went to San Diego for one season, where he struggled to maintain a starting job.

Here are his numbers over five seasons in the NFL:

  • 63 games played
  • 241 total tackles
  • 204 solo tackles
  • 39 passes defended
  • 13 interceptions

If Cox can return to the form that he had while he was playing in Jacksonville, this could prove to be a steal in free agency.  He is a former Pro-Bowl alternate who could find himself a project of this new Vikings defense.

Exactly. He was very good only 2 or 3 years ago, I know Zimmer thinks he can get that Derek Cox back….. I believe the Vikings may have found something here…

I’m sorry Vikings, I’m sorry. Very sorry. VERY VERY VERY sorry. Hopefully he’ll do better in the purple. Damn dude nearly cause me a heart attack…

Sounds like we should’ve traded Cook to SD even up last yr for Cox!! Lol! I’ll trust Zimmer, and if he doesn’t work out, it’s only a 1yr deal. Our Defense is starting to take shape! Gilbert in rd 1, Shazier or Ward( if either one falls) in rd 2, Garropolo/ other QB Norv, Rick, and Zimmer like and LG/ LB/SS in 3rd!! Watch out!!

hmmm…. Everything else has been good so far regarding free agency so im assuming zimmer thinks he can mold this guy. Definitely cant hurt, no more than josh robinson and chris cook at least.

He was the worst cb by far on a defense that was pretty terrible against the pass.

If he starts for you guys, you are in trouble. I’d pick up another Rhodes in the draft and you’ll be set on the ends.

Boy, as a Chargers fan, and a half-fan of the Vikings as my good friend is a big fan, I have to give you the true Chargers lowdown on Cox.

He sucked. Bad. Really really bad. He was a total joke for us last season and was completely benched during our playoff run.

He came in with very high hopes, and was one of our marquee signings from Jax. Most fans had no idea why jax was giving this stud away.

Well, when Jax gives a guy away, it should set up some red flags.

Look, it is possible he may go back to 2-3 years ago Cox and play well. However, given that he was healthy last year and had plenty of playing time the first half of the season…don’t count on it. He couldn’t tackle and gave up at least 2-3 20+ yards plays a game, if not more. Dreadful.

Good luck Vikes. I hope Rhodes becomes a better player than this guy.

So what im hearing is that hes chris cook.
BTW do u guys want Chris Cook? Because u can have him. Please take him….

      • berkeleyman81

I am sure the Bolts would trade Chris Cook for Lennay Kekua straight up.

Vikes, draft SS Bucannon Wash. State, and you’ll never regret it. Toughest hitter in college.
