Vikings Draft Targets: Devonta Freeman Visits

Thursday sees another running back prospect visiting the Vikings. Aaron Wilson reports that Florida State’s Devonta Freeman is in town to get the old once-over from Rick Spielman and company.

The Vikings have already taken a look at Towson running back Terrance West.

Freeman projects into the same area of the draft as West, that second/third round area where running backs are expected to start coming off the board.

In the past you would have expected some running backs to go in the first round, but that position has been severely devalued.

Freeman has more or less the same size-skill profile as Terrance West. He’s 5-9, 209 – short but thickly built. He ran a 4.58 40 at the combine so he has better-than-adequate speed.

He also has a well-rounded game, showing receiving and blocking skills.

In other words, he’s precisely the kind of back we would expect the Vikings to target. A potential receiving weapon out of the backfield who possesses the overall physical skills needed to step in as Adrian Peterson‘s successor when that becomes necessary.

Freeman is a great story with a ton of heart and would bean excellent back. He just seems to find the space to run.
