2014 NFL Draft: Vikings Select Oregon State DE Scott Crichton

Just when you think the Vikings are done working on their defensive line, they go out and draft Oregon State DE Scott Crichton with the #72 overall pick.

I guess Mike Zimmer likes the Pac-12?

What kind of player is Scott Crichton. This is interesting, but scouting reports actually compare him to Brian Robison. Not the most talented guy in the world but a tough grinder who will always be revved up.

The 6-3, 273 pound Crichton is a guy who could play some defensive end and also – this could be the key part – can kick inside in third down situations.

We know Mike Zimmer famously likes defensive linemen with the flexibility to play different spots, and Crichton would seem to fit that bill.

He projects as a situational player who, if he improves over time, might give you an every-down defensive end. Maybe down the road when you’re ready to move on from Robison.

Another piece to the defensive puzzle for Mike Zimmer. The Vikings of course took the supremely talented but very raw Anthony Barr with the #9 overall pick.

The guy who loves developing defensive talent has drafted two players who will need some development.
