One-Time Viking Darrin Nelson Chosen for College Football Hall of Fame

The College Football Hall of Fame has selected its 2014 class of inductees, and there is a former Viking star among them. One-time Minnesota running back Darrin Nelson has gotten the call from the college hall for his four years of production at Stanford.

Nelson, the prototypical all-purpose back, racked up 4,033 rushing yards, 2,362 receiving yards and 56 total TDs in four years of college ball. Nelson would be drafted by the Vikings with the seventh overall pick in 1982, and would go on to play for a decade in the NFL.

Though Nelson never became the true big-time featured back the Vikings wished him to become, he did have a nice career in purple. He was a truly great back in college and fully deserves to be included in the Hall.

The full list of college HoF inductees for 2014:

Derrick Thomas LB Alabama
LaDainian Tomlinson RB TCU

Nelson dropped the pass on the goal line from Whisky Wade that cost the Vikings the 1987-8 NFC Championship to the eventual Super bowl champion Redskins after they had beat the 12-3 Saints and 13-2 49ers (led by Montana, Steve Young and Jerry Rice).

Disco Darrin. Said Minneapolis was too small for him. He didn’t want to come here and proved it by his play.
