The dreaded “m” word is cropping up for Matt Cassel. You knew it was inevitable with a new rookie quarterback coming in. Every veteran QB gets the same questions about mentoring the new guy.
Cassel got the question while innocently making his way somewhere in L.A. A TMZ photographer with a basic grasp of the Vikings’ QB dynamic flung a query at Cassel about mentoring Teddy Bridgewater and Cassel deflected it, saying “If you want to call it that. I’m just a teammate, brutha.”
I would caution against reading too much into Cassel’s slightly defensive response, given the circumstances under which the question was asked. Dude was just trying to get somewhere and this guy wants to hold an impromptu interview. Really annoying.
At the same time, Cassel has to know he’s going to get that question. He is going to get that question a lot between now and the season. It’s not to soon for him to start polishing his stock responses.
“I’m just a teammate brutha,” is okay but it does make him sound a tad prickly. You don’t want to seem prickly, or people will think you hate the guy like Brett Favre hated Aaron Rodgers.
The mix you’re going for is “determined to keep the starting job but at the same time willing to do whatever is best for the team.” Matt has some time to work on that before the real media crunch begins.
