Life is precarious for a member of an NFL practice squad, and if you don’t believe me just ask cornerback Kendall James.
A 2014 sixth-round draft pick out of Maine, James was added to the Vikings’ practice squad Sunday after being let go as part of final cuts.
James had just enough time to get used to the idea of being on the practice squad when he found out he is being cut from the practice squad, a move necessitated by the Vikings’ desire to hold on to OT Austin Wentworth.
A UDFA out of Fresno State, Wentworth was himself cut on Sunday so the Vikings could add former Chargers OT Mike Harris to the 53-man roster.
The Vikings knew they wanted to bring Wentworth back to the practice squad and were just waiting for him to clear waivers. The waiver process played out, Wentworth went unclaimed, and the Vikings put him on the PS at the expense of Kendall James.
So James has the dubious distinction now of being the only Vikings 2014 draft pick to be cut both from the 53 man roster and the practice squad.
I guess that pick officially didn’t work out. Can’t win them all.
