It was announced yesterday that the state of Minnesota was looking to change the name of some of the streets around in downtown Minneapolis.  The 600 block of Ninth Avenue South is currently named after baseball legend Rod Carew, but that will change when Carew Drive to moved closer to Target Field.

That means that the area where Carew Drive now sits will be looking for a new name.  Two members of the Minneapolis City Council brought forth the idea to rename that stretch of road after legendary Minnesota Vikings head coach Bud Grant.

On Monday, that very idea was brought before the Minneapolis Planning Commission and was approved to go forward.

Bud Grant was the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings for 18 seasons.  During that time, the team won 11 division championships and made four Super Bowl appearances.  He started his coaching career in Minnesota in 1967 and ran through 1983, with Grant returning for one season in 1985.  Under his guidance, the Vikings had a record of 168-96-5.

Personally, I think naming a section of Minneapolis after Bud Grant is long overdue.  Bud Grant’s legacy is well known by fans around the world and his impact on the franchise is still felt today.  He is an icon in the coaching world and adored by football fans worldwide.
