Safety depth is becoming an issue for the Vikings with Robert Blanton hurting and Andrew Sendejo also getting banged up (though Sendejo was able to finish out Sunday’s game against the Lions).

With that in mind, the Vikes will reportedly elevate safety Ahmad Dixon from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. A roster spot was opened up when the Vikings cut OT J’Marcus Webb.

A 2014 seventh round pick out of Baylor, Dixon showed promise during Cowboys training camp but also pulled some major boners and was ultimately cut by Dallas.

The Vikings added Dixon to the practice squad early in the year only to see him get snatched away by the Bears. After using him on special teams for a little while, Chicago decided they didn’t need Dixon and he was cut from their roster.

Miami was the next team to take a shot on Dixon, adding him to their practice squad after his release from the Bears. He was not with Miami long before being let go.

Given a second chance to pick up Dixon, the Vikings did not hesitate, re-adding him to their practice squad. Now Dixon will get his second chance this season on an active roster.

At Baylor, Dixon earned a reputation as an effective in-the-box safety but his coverage skills were an issue. Character is also a concern given his arrest for assault last September. He also showed some less-than-stellar habits in his stint with the Cowboys, reportedly missing some meetings.

At the very least, elevating Dixon to the active roster protects him from being plucked again. Mike Zimmer is clearly intrigued by this guy’s talent and now he’ll have a chance to look at him as a roster player.
