T.J. Clemmings Gets Reps At Right Guard In First OTA Session

Mike Zimmer said the Vikings were going to try Brandon Fusco at left guard and give rookie T.J. Clemmings a look at right guard.

As always, Mike Zimmer is a man of his word. Tuesday’s first OTA session indeed saw Clemmings working at right guard.
Photographic proof was posted by the Vikings.

Recently, I speculated that the decision to try Fusco at left guard mostly had to do with trying to help out Matt Kalil. ESPN’s Andrew Krammer read the situation the same way:

"Kalil has known no other left guard than Johnson in his three-year NFL career and it’d likely be worth taking any lumps that come with inexperience or subpar play on the right side to assure Kalil is in the best scenario to succeed on the left. Pairing him with the team’s best guard could go a long way, especially in pass protection when communication is integral in defending against even the simplest line stunts and/or blitz schemes."

As sound as this thinking may be, it still leaves you with a hole at right guard. At least early on, it appears T.J. Clemmings is the man the Vikings are looking at to fill that hole.

If Clemmings can’t get it done, you always have Joe Berger who has filled in well at right guard for the Vikings in the past.

Clemmings played right tackle his final year at Pitt so it’s safe to assume he is better suited to playing on the right side of the line, at least initially.

Where Clemmings ends up next year is anyone’s guess. Some people think he could play left tackle.
