Teddy Bridgewater: Is he “a top-flight quarterback”?

It is a good time for the Minnesota Vikings.  They’re currently a trendy choice to make the playoffs and the media seems to like a lot of things about this team.

Sadly, one person that isn’t seeing a lot of love is quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, at least not in quarterback rankings anyway.

He is only entering his second season in the NFL, but not everyone sees a lot of potential in the former Louisville Cardinals passer.  In fact, he’s been called a “third tier quarterback” and other writers feel he lacks the skills to be a successful professional quarterback.  While these lists and rankings are fun to read about and interesting to look at, not everyone feels that they are a good representation of how things really are on the football field.

Recently, offensive coordinator Norv Turner spoke to the media following training camp and addressed a question about where he sees Teddy Bridgewater rank among the NFL’s quarterbacks.  Here is how he answered according to the transcript on Vikings.com:

"“There is only four or five guys I would trust in evaluating quarterbacks because I don’t think there are many guys that understand what you’re trying to do at the position and understand the evaluation process. That really makes those evaluations less meaningful. The one evaluation we care about is ours, and I think based on where we got to last year and where we think we’re going, I think we have a top-flight quarterback.”"

Of course very few (if any) offensive coordinators will say that they don’t have a quarterback worth playing on their roster, but Norv Turner has a very genuine quality to him that makes me believe when he says he believes in Teddy Bridgewater.  There are plenty of reasons to be excited about Teddy, including a high completion percentage, great pocket awareness and amazing maturity for a man of his age.

While not everyone will agree on the future of Bridgewater, we already know that the Minnesota Vikings will give him every chance they can and help him by providing as much support as possible to help him become a franchise quarterback for the team.  From the sound of things, Turner might already be on board with giving Teddy the franchise crown.
