Brian Peters: LB stakes his claim to roster spot

Former CFL player Brian Peters is making a push for a roster spot with the Minnesota Vikings.

After a very strong couple weeks of camp, Peters got to show his stuff in preseason action Sunday night against the Steelers. He delivered with a fumble recovery on a ball that got away from Steelers tight end Jesse James (it was originally ruled an interception).

Peters also added two tackles on the evening.

Last month Mike Zimmer sang the former Saskatchewan Roughrider’s praises (via Minneapolis Star-Tribune):

"“Brian is doing a nice job with all the coverage aspects of where he’s supposed to be, you’d expect that from a converted safety,” Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said. “The question is, when he gets the pads on how will he be in that area, so again, the physicality. But in shorts he’s doing a good job, he knows where to be, he can run, he’s pretty smart.”"

How will he be when he gets the pads on? Zim, I think we have the answer to that.

With Peters coming on, Brandon Watts and Michael Mauti both have to be put on notice. With five linebacker spots more-or-less set in stone (Barr, Hodges, Cole, Greenway and Kendricks), it’s going to be Peters, Watts and Mauti duking it out for that sixth spot.

Peters’ work on special teams, which was praised last week by Mike Priefer, could be the thing that puts him over the top.
