Edmond Robinson: Gerald Hodges trade opens door for rookie

Eric Kendricks isn’t the only Vikings rookie who will benefit by the team’s decision to trade linebacker Gerald Hodges. 7th round draft pick Edmond Robinson also has reason to be happy that Hodges is gone.

With Hodges traded and the Vikings down to five linebackers on the 53-man roster, the door is open for Robinson to make the game-day lineup this week as both a special teams player and a backup linebacker.

And indeed the Vikings do seem ready to give Robinson his chance come this weekend’s game vs. the Chiefs.

The last player taken by the Vikings in this year’s draft, Robinson popped a little bit during preseason and that definitely helped him when it came time for the Vikings to trim their roster.

Linebacker was kind of a loaded position for the Vikes in preseason, leading to a lot of tough decisions for Rick Spielman and Mike Zimmer.

In the end, the Vikings elected to cut Michael Mauti and Brian Peters, adding Peters to the practice squad later (only to see him get snatched by the Houston Texans).

Even after those losses the Vikings had enough linebacker talent on the roster to feel comfortable trading Gerald Hodges for an offensive lineman and a draft pick.

The plan now is for Eric Kendricks to play on every down with Chad Greenway as a part-time player at the Will and Audie Cole as the main backup.

And Robinson now gets his shot on special teams while providing more depth at linebacker.
