The trades between the Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins during the 2016 NFL Draft seemed rather one-sided, with the Vikings bringing home a nice haul.

It’s always odd to see when a team trades around so much in the draft that they end up trading for picks they traded away. It’s not something that happens on a regular basis during the NFL Draft, but that’s exactly what happened when the phones were ringing between the Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins starting on day 2 of the draft.

On paper, these deals are very one-sided when you pick them apart. However, as with the NFL Draft, any pick is just as good as the player who is selected with it. But, just for the sake of a draft recap, check out just how Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman was able to maneuver himself.

Lets break these trades down:

  1. Minnesota trades the #86 overall pick to Miami for the #186 as well as a 3rd round and a 4th round pick in 2017.
  2. Minnesota trades the #186 pick to Miami for #196 and #227.
  3. Minnesota trades picks #196 and #227 to Philadelphia for #188 and #240.

To make things a little simpler, cancel out the picks that are blue, red, and green. Essentially, the Minnesota Vikings traded their third rounder this year for Miami’s third and fourth rounder next near by only moving down two spots in the sixth round and down 13 spots in the 7th.

For those who don’t trust Rick Spielman to get the most value possible from his draft picks, this should be a prime example of just how far the Minnesota Vikings general managers has come since his struggling days as the GM for the Miami Dolphins.

To be fair, the Miami Dolphins got what they wanted in the trades as well. With the picks they got from the Minnesota Vikings, they were able to draft wide receivers Leonte Carroo and Jakeem Grant to help bolster their passing game. However, they gave up quite a bit to get them, and the Minnesota Vikings were the team that reaped the benefits of the trades.
