Vikings Reveal Training Camp Dates

Mark your calendars people. Vikings training camp will open in Mankato on July 26th and the team will break camp on August 16th. Those dates were revealed by the team on Wednesday in between back-end roster moves.

The astute among you have already noted that the last day of camp comes after the first preseason game this year. In recent years the Vikings have broken camp before the first preseason game. I’m assuming the decision to extend camp an extra week is a reflection of all the youth and inexperience on the roster this year. Coaching staff wants to get those guys as much work as possible.

I’m sure the veterans will be thrilled at news of the extended training camp. We know how the old guys love the camp experience. But that’s how it is when you’re rebuilding. Got a lot of new guys to get up to speed.

NFC North Round-Up: Brandon Hardin, Johnny Jolly, Nick Fairley

The Vikings aren’t up to much so let’s take a quick spin around the division:

The Bears finished signing their 2012 draft picks, inking safety Brandon Hardin to a 4-year deal. All six Bears draft picks are signed before the Vikings have even signed one. Not saying that means anything, just throwing it out there.

Former Packers defensive lineman Johnny Jolly is leaving jail after receiving what is known as “shock probation.” Basically, Jolly convinced a judge that jail was too traumatic for him and he deserved early release. Jolly, who has admitted being addicted to the substance known as “purple drink,” was originally sentenced to six years after violating his probation from a drug conviction. Jolly will be on shock probation for 10 years and will have to perform 200 hours of community service.

In other substance-related news, Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley has been placed in the NFL’s substance abuse program after an April 3 marijuana arrest. Fairley had been scheduled to be arraigned in that case on Monday but it was pushed back so his lawyer could have more time to put a defense together.

Mark Dayton Signs Vikings Stadium Bill Into Law (Video)

In case you missed it, here’s the entire stadium bill signing ceremony from Monday afternoon at the Minnesota State Capitol. Plenty of luminaries were in attendance at the event including Vikings owner Zygi Wilf, stadium front man Lester Bagley and State Senator Julie Rosen. And there were a bunch of fans who reportedly shouted down protesters when they began chanting “Zygi got bailed out, we got sold out.” Oh simmer down believers in free speech.
