The Vikings have finally brought in a free agent cornerback. Specifically, one that fits the Vikings’ mold:

Cheap and young (in that order).

Jeff Dickerson of ESPN Chicago reported Monday that Zack Bowman signed a 1-year contract for the veteran minimum with the Vikings.

This signing fits with every move the Vikings have made this offseason and exactly what Spielman has been preaching all year: build through the draft, add bits and pieces in free agency.

Bowman, formerly with the Bears, looks the part standing at 6 feet 1 inch, 196 pounds. In 2009, he had–by Vikings’ standards–an unbelievable year with six interceptions. However, the 27-year-old was benched three games into the 2010 season and started only one game last season while racking up just 15 tackles.

While it may not be the most exciting signing in Vikings history, it is one that comes with no risk and some potential for a reward. Bowman was brought in to compete, and he may not even make the team. But he could, and if he does, he will be a cheap, young cornerback on a team desperate for depth at the position.

If nothing else, we can take solace in the fact that we stole a backup cornerback from the Bears.

As we all continue to debate which free agent wide receiver we want to see in a Minnesota Vikings jersey in 2012, the names most frequently mentioned are Vincent Jackson and Dwayne Bowe.  While both are wonderful targets, let me throw a name at you that is almost being forgotten:  Reggie Wayne.  Thanks to the Indianapolis Colts Owner Jim Irsay, apparently wanting to move in a different direction, and showing more interest in re-signing Colts wide-out Pierre Garcon, it seems Reggie Wayne will most likely be a free agent who is up for grabs.  Sure when you think about the incredible size and talents of V-Jax, maybe Wayne isn’t the “sexier” option to shoot for…but maybe he’s a little more realistic of an option.  As I mentioned (more…)
