Big changes on the Vikings’ offensive line. Jeremy Fowler of the Pioneer-Press has broken the news (via Twitter) that the team will cut guards Steve Hutchinson and Anthony Herrera. It was a foregone conclusion that Herrera would be cut, but Hutchinson still had a chance to stay on a restructured contract. Obviously the Hutch renegotiation didn’t work out and now the former Pro Bowler is on the street.

Both Hutchinson and Herrera battled through injuries in 2011, fueling speculation that they would be let go after the season. The Vikings’ stated intention to rebuild with younger talent all but sealed their fates. These two moves will save the Vikings a reported $9.7 million against the cap.

Candidates to start at guard in 2012 include Charlie Johnson, who played left tackle last season but is better suited to the guard position. The right guard spot will likely go down to a camp battle between veteran Joe Berger and 2011 draft pick Brandon Fusco. The Vikings could also dip into free agency, but don’t look for them to make a run at Carl Nicks, the #1 prize at the position.

The Vikings may have won Saturday night’s preseason tilt with Seattle, but the victory came at a pretty high cost. Today Leslie Frazier revealed that guard Scott Kooistra suffered a jammed neck during the game, an injury severe enough that Kooistra has still not been able to leave Seattle. The Vikings have been forced to place Kooistra on IR, ending his season. The move freed up a roster spot which the Vikings have already filled by signing DE Stylez White.

Saturday night’s game was Kooistra’s first start of the preaseason and his last (and probably his last action ever in purple). It had been hoped that he might figure into the right guard mix with Chris DeGeare – who has actually been getting reps at right tackle lately – and Anthony Herrera, who is still coming back from a knee injury, but obviously the Vikings will now have to look elsewhere for offensive line depth. They still have Ryan Cook, who is a solid enough vet though a tad penalty-prone.

Just when you thought the offensive line couldn’t be any more of a mess…

After a Ryan Cook-like number of false starts and endless reams of Twitter speculation and beat writer guesswork we finally have a fairly concrete view of the post-lockout timeline as regards free agent signings and camp openings and such. I say “fairly” because for all I know this could change between now and the time I click publish. Maybe I should hurry.

Okay here’s what we have, in handy table form:

Tuesday – Teams can trade players and sign rookies. UFAs free to begin negotiating with teams.

Wednesday – Team facilities open. This does not mean camps open. It means team facilities open. Note the difference.

Thursday – Waivers begin at 3 PM CT. Prominent Vikings who could be cut starting then include Bernard Berrian, Madieu Williams, Anthony Herrera and Greg Camarillo.

Friday – UFAs can begin signing with teams. 5 PM CT will be the official start of the free agency stampede. Sidney Rice will probably be an ex-Viking by say sevenish.

Weekend – Camps open.

An additional note on the free agency timeline: There will be no exclusive window for teams to sign their own free agents. You remember all those weeks of discussion about Sidney Rice that included talk of the 72-hour window? That’s, um, out the window.

And now we wait for someone to come along and inform us this is all wrong. Happy post-lockout week fans!
