The TE poll is winding down here on The Viking Age, and it looks like Visanthe Shiancoe is going to be the winner. Thanks to everyone who voted, especially the Viking fans. Unlike the readers over at Bear Goggles On, where Jay Cutler is a distant fourth in the QB poll, the TVA faithful know how to hold their home field.

Now, all you need to do is go back to Bear Goggles On, and then over to Side Lion Report, and vote two more times.

On Bear Goggles, we’ve got the #2 running back poll going. That one’s not that important for us though, because Adrian Peterson has already been selected as the #1 back, and there isn’t a Viking in the running for the #2 slot. But you can vote anyway…just for the fun of it.

On Side Lion however, there is a Viking in the running, for the second DT slot. Kevin Williams has already locked down one of the positions, and now it’s between four guys – Pat Williams, Ndamukong Suh, Tommie Harris and B.J. Raji – for that other spot. Please vote. Eventually we should have all these polls done, and be ready to announce the All-NFC North offensive and defensive squads.

About a month ago, the website NFLDraftbible.com began throwing out names of players they believed had tested positive for drugs at the combine, a list that included everyone from USC linebacker Clay Matthews to Boston College DT B.J. Raji to Florida WR Percy Harvin. Unfortunately for the reputation, and perhaps future survival, of that particular site, the report turned out to be erroneous in almost every case, and now such exonerated players as Matthews and Raji are seeing their draft stock recover from the temporary hit laid on it by their inclusion in the questionable website postings. One guy who will not be receiving the benefit of such an exoneration, however, is Percy Harvin, who, it has now been confirmed, indeed tested positive for marijuana at the combine, along with North Carolina receiver Brandon Tate.

This positive test, along with numerous other accounts of Harvin’s questionable attitude and coachability while at Florida, has all but scuttled any shot the receiver had at being taken in the first round, either by the Vikings at #22 or anywhere else. Is this just? You can argue that marijuana laws are by themselves unjust and silly, and I would tend to agree, but that isn’t really the issue here. Wrong or right, the rules exist, and the guys know ahead of time that they’re going to be tested. Harvin had every chance in the world to lay off the weed and pee clean at the combine, but was either too dumb or arrogant to do so. There’s also the fact that, if a guy tests positive at the combine then gets drafted, he comes into the league with a strike against him in the league’s substance abuse policy. Why should a team spend a first-round pick on a guy who not only lacks the self-discipline to stay clean for the test but already stands just one violation away from getting suspended? There’s no reason to. Harvin is a bad risk and I wouldn’t take him. I hope it was a good smoke.

A pair of guys who may be in the Vikings‘ sights come draft day tested positive for marijuana at the combine according to NFL Draft Bible. One of the two players, WR Percy Harvin, is scheduled to visit the team when they host a throng of draft prospects next week, while the second, CB Vontae Davis, though not scheduled to visit, has been named as a possible target for the Vikes when they pick #22 overall (the third failed drug testee, B.J. Raji, is not on Minnesota’s radar).

I was actually starting to be sold on the idea of the Vikes drafting Harvin – assuming OT Eben Britton is no longer available when #22 rolls around – but this changes my mind a bit. Not that I necessarily care about a guy smoking pot – in fact, I don’t care a lick about it; the NFL is full of guys who like the hippie lettuce, and the majority of them show up for work on Sunday and are solid team guys. However, if you’re a young draft prospect like Harvin or Davis, and you know you’ve got this drug test coming up, and the whole idea now is to make a good impression on your potential future employers…call me silly, but wouldn’t you hope a guy in that position would be able to suck it up and lay off the weed? At least long enough to be clean for the test?

This incident calls both players’ self-discipline and commitment into question. That might not matter for a team like the Raiders or Cowboys, who only care about amassing talent, but it does matter to Zygi Wilf, Brad Childress and the Vikings, who have run guys like Dwight Smith out of town largely on the basis of off-field shenanigans. Wouldn’t shock me to see the Vikes drop Harvin off their draft board entirely.
