NFL free agency starts on March 13, only 33 days away. So now is the time to dissect our pending free agents. After the resigning of Pat Brown, the Vikings have 17 free agents to be.

Since we’re all Vikings fans and in need of some good news, I’ll start there. There are only four starters on this list: EJ and Erin Henderson, Husain Abdullah, and Visanthe Shiancoe. So not to worry, the team that went 3-13 and tied for the worst record in Vikings history will almost completely return! Oh, wait. Well, it’s news anyway.

In that list of four starters, the only guy I see as a lock for returning is Erin Henderson. With two-thirds of the Vikings’ linebacking core set to be free agents, at least one will need to be resigned. It could get a little awkward if they split up the brothers, but the NFL is a business and Erin is younger and healthier.

]]> It’s never too late in the year for a Vikings defensive back to get in trouble. Paul Charchian gave the skinny Friday afternoon on Twitter. Sapp, according to FOX 9 in Minneapolis, was arrested Friday following “an altercation with a security guard.” I’m sure this story will become exceedingly ridiculous once the full details are known.

Even as we speak the Vikings are preparing their generic “we are aware of the player’s situation and have no choice but to let the legal process run its course” statement. For those worried about Benny’s status for Sunday’s game…why are you worried about Benny’s status for Sunday’s game? If he plays, great; if he doesn’t play, great. Either way, this horrific season ends Sunday. That’s what we need to focus on.

Update: Benny Sapp was not arrested. He received a citation after some kind of situation. Well that’s a relief.

Vikings Sign Benny Sapp to Replace Antoine Winfield - The Viking Age - The Viking Age - A Minnesota Vikings Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and more.

]]> Antoine Winfield’s second major injury of the season landed the veteran CB on IR, but the roster hole left by Winfield’s departure wasn’t open for long. On Wednesday morning the Vikings hastily worked out former Dolphin Benny Sapp, and by noon the team was ready to announce that Sapp had passed his physical and been signed to a contract.

Of course we all remember Sapp’s first tenure with the Vikings when, filling in for Antoine Winfield during his 2009 absence with a foot injury, Sapp proved himself to be an able coverage guy. Sapp was traded before the 2010 season to the Dolphins in exchange for Greg Camarillo, a move the Vikings probably ended up regretting given their later secondary issues. Benny’s stint in Miami ended abruptly in early 2011 after he got burned by Tom Brady and Wes Welker for a 99-yard touchdown.

It remains to be seen what role Sapp will fill on the team but given his experience and familiarity with the Vikings offense – and given Cedric Griffin’s well-documented struggles the last few weeks – I have to believe he’ll see the field a lot on Sunday and for the rest of the season. (more…)
