When I say “change in philosophy” I’m talking about the whole approach to hiring from the top of the organization on down. The current approach, the one the Wilfs have clung to since buying the team, is characterized by an apparent extreme aversion to pursuing known quantities in filling major roles. Go back to last off-season. The Wilfs could’ve gone after Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator, but instead brought in the relatively untested Bill Musgrave. They could’ve attempted to hire a name defensive coordinator or at least a genuine up-and-comer in the assistant ranks but instead stuck with Fred Pagac (we know how that worked out). Even Leslie Frazier, despite being thought of as a hot candidate, was not exactly a man of vast experience in running a team. Jim Harbaugh was more battle-tested, even if only as a college coach, but the Wilfs elected to stay with Frazier. Look where the 49ers stand now compared to the Vikings and you can understand why many fans are frustrated with the decision to not even sniff around Harbaugh.

Indianapolis Colts starting defensive tackle Ed Johnson was arrested Wednesday morning for speeding and marijuana possession. Colts GM Bill Polian says the team is still working out how to discipline the second-year player. Coach Tony Dungy confirms that, whatever Johnson’s punishment ends up being, it will definitely include him not playing this Sunday at the Metrodome against the Vikings. Great year so far for the Colts, eh? They lose Peyton Manning for the preseason, then have center Jeff Saturday go down (it’s still unknown whether he will play this Sunday), then see TE Dallas Clark suffer another injury. And now a suspension for a starting defensive player coming off a game that saw them surrender 29 points to the offensively-challenged Bears. Fire up Adrian Peterson and get ready for some up-the-middle action. If Matt Forte can ring up 123 yards on them, what can AD do? Put me down for at least 200.

Yeah, I know, it’s hard to be overconfident given the way the Colts have owned the Vikings in recent years. But I don’t care. Indy is clearly on the way downhill. Marvin Harrison is basically finished (with football, not shooting people), Manning is having health problems for the first time and the defense is unraveling. This is not the Colts of two years ago when they won the Super Bowl. And yes, I realize I picked them to win it this year, but now I think I’ll have to reassess. I smell a nice bounce-back victory this weekend for the Vikings. Hopefully the Colts won’t lose anymore starters between now and then, either to injury or felonious activity.
