Would the Vikings have drafted Blaine Gabbert at #12? We’ll never know, because the Jaguars picked him off at #10 after trading up with the Redskins.

Gabbert fell to 10 only after several teams believed to be interested in a QB passed on him. Among those who said no on Gabbert: the Tennessee Titans, who made Jake Locker the #2 quarterback selected.

There was mild chatter that the Vikings might try to trade up above 10 to get Gabbert but it was never more than mild. There had been rumors all day that the Redskins wanted to trade down, and indeed, they ultimately did.

What we don’t know, of course, is if the Vikings ever wanted Gabbert. We do know they liked Locker, but Locker went earlier than expected. It’s possible that, in the Vikings’ own minds, their draft has already been a disappointment. Unless they really love Christian Ponder.

One QB down, several to go. Blaine Gabbert is expected to be the next QB off the board, probably at the #7 pick, which belongs to the 49ers.

If Gabbert somehow lasts past 7…the game may be afoot.

The Vikings‘ quest to land a new franchise quarterback would be an immeasurably easier one if only those pesky Redskins, who also need a quarterback, weren’t sitting there two spots ahead of them.

Well guess what: there’s a rumor that the Redskins may be looking to trade down from the 10 spot to 17, in a deal with the New England Patriots. The Pats would then select North Carolina DE Robert Quinn.

Were this trade to happen, there would be one less team ahead of the Vikings looking at quarterback. This would presumably increase the possibility of a Jake Locker or maybe even a Blaine Gabbert making it all the way down to 12.

The pieces will start falling into place less than an hour from now.
