Randy Moss has been increasing his visibility in recent weeks, first joining Twitter and then starting a Ustream. You remember Ustream right? It was really big a couple years ago with show-off athletes. The phenomenon reached its dubious peak with Stephon Marbury eating Vaseline. Then Charlie Sheen got in on the act and sort of killed it.

I’m happy to report that Randy Moss hasn’t yet eaten petroleum jelly on Ustream nor has he invented any catch-phrases or talked about his tiger blood. He has however dropped one pretty big announcement. He says he’s coming back to the NFL in 2012.

“Faith, family, and football, that’s my M.O., bro,” Moss told his viewers. ”Your boy be back for the upcoming season.”

Moss mentioned that off-field issues played a part in his decision to retire. But now that stuff has been resolved and his family has given him permission to get back to football. The question now becomes, is there a team out there that’s willing to accommodate Moss? The pool of free agent wide receiver talent is pretty deep, and most of the guys on that list are much younger than Moss who just turned 35.

I would definitely sign Moss before Chad Ochocinco (soon to be Johnson again) or Terrell Owens but that’s not really saying much as both those guys are has-beens. For Moss’ sake I hope someone does take a flyer on him, cause watching him sit there all off-season and not get called would be sad. I don’t know what team would want him, but I do know two teams you can definitely cross off the list: the Vikings and (Brad Childress’ new team) the Browns. He’d fit well on the Eagles, just because they like signing big-name players who don’t necessarily help you win.

As a head coach. For the Indianapolis Colts. Take a moment and let that sink in. A year-and-a-half after the Vikings canned him, Chilly is a candidate for head coach with one of the proudest and most successful organizations in the league.

WTF?

Well let’s look more closely at this situation. There’s one thing to keep in mind: this proud and successful organization is currently operating without the man who, in most people’s eyes, was responsible for building that tradition of pride and success. Bill Polian is long-gone, and owner Jim Irsay is now running the show. Yes, the same Jim Irsay who regularly communicates with the masses via tweets of rock lyrics. The same Jim Irsay who recently got into a slight Twitter tiff with actor Rob Lowe. The same Jim Irsay who makes Sinead O’Connor look like a model of mental stability.

Okay let’s be real here. The season didn’t actually begin with a lot of promise. For some of us it began with optimism but this proved unwarranted. Sure, the Vikings had a chance to win some games early, but they proved pretty quickly that they didn’t have the stuff to close out wins and get on a roll. They just never looked like a winning team. Winning teams don’t blow multiple halftime leads. They don’t become so offensively inert that even producing a first down seems a hopeless task. They don’t break down defensively to the point where even mediocre offenses are able to go up and down the field on them at will. You can hang your hat on the “at least they didn’t get blown out much” argument but to me that doesn’t fly. Take everything that happened this year and add it up and you get exactly what the Vikings are, a bottom-feeding team.
