Brett Favre has passed into the spinning-yarns portion of his post-NFL life. Here’s a good one he told to the radio. It’s about the last play of his career. A play that is burned into the minds of all Viking fans (and if it’s not burned into your mind, I’ve included a GIF so you can burn it). Brett says that play vs. the Bears at TCF was the only time in his entire long, storied career when he was knocked out cold.

My last play. Actually the only time in my career when I was completely out. Ten to 15 seconds. Miserable night, the dome had collapsed, our season had gone from bad to worse. I didn’t have to play in the game, wanted to. I remember telling myself in pregame, “You’re an idiot, what do you stand to gain in this?” But I thought, “I’ll survive this game, I’ll be fine.”

[It was] one of the most minor hits I’ve ever [taken]. The guy didn’t even hit me, he pushed me. I threw the ball and the field of course was solid ice, it was like concrete. I hit the left side of my head and the next thing I remember, I was snoring as our trainer was kind of shaking me saying, “Are you OK?” I look at the footage, even though it wasn’t long, there was that 10-15 second period where I was asleep.

Packer fans are probably snickering right now. They’re probably thinking, “Oh really Brett? You were fully conscious during that NFC title game against the Giants? And that playoff game against the Vikings when you threw 500 picks? Sure buddy. Have another beer Brett.”

Here’s the play in case you need to relive it again and again and again. Bears fans probably enjoy it.

Brett Favre has hung up the pads for good and is currently getting his football fix by coaching high school kids in Mississippi. But, believe it or not, Ed Werder is still following him around like a sad dog. Brett threw Ed a bone and sat down for an interview. A quick summary of the interview: Brett Favre is still his same old fun-loving self. Amazingly Ed doesn’t ask Favre about comeback plans. “Still got the itch Brett? Come on, say you still got the itch. Seriously Brett, please come back. My life is meaningless without you!!!”

Seriously though, just on the basis of this footage, I’d say Brett really really really is done this time. He seems content. He also looks really old. Like, grandpa old. Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull old. Jamie Moyer old. Forget it Ed, no comeback. You’re stuck down there in Mississippi until Brett lands a college job. Ed’s hoping for USC. Brett’s hoping for anyplace with hot college girls who like older guys.

The Rick Spielman youth movement has cleared out a lot of fan favorites from the last couple years, including Visanthe Shiancoe who is now officially an ex-Viking after signing a one-year $1.2 million contract with the New England Patriots. Was 2009 only 3 years ago or 10? Of Brett Favre’s favorite receiving weapons from that team, only Percy Harvin remains. Shank is now gone along with Chester Taylor and Sidney Rice. I was going to add Bernard Berrian but of course we know Favre didn’t like Berrian and froze him out.

As for Shank, good for him joining a franchise that has a chance to go deep into the playoffs this year. Though one has to wonder how much Shank will even see the field with Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez and Daniel Fells already in the mix. Clearly touches aren’t as important to Shank as just the chance to be on a winning team. He also reportedly visited the Eagles, a team that might’ve let him see more action. I don’t know if the Eagles ever offered him a contract, but at any rate he’s now on the Patriots. So we could very well see Shank catching balls in the Super Bowl.
