Remember all that drama years back with Tyler Thigpen when the Vikings wanted to sneak him onto the practice squad but he was claimed off waivers by the Chiefs and Brad Childress was supposedly distraught over losing him? It looks like the Vikings may have a chance to rectify that ancient mistake. In a tweet, Miami Herald writer Jeff Darlington said free agent Thigpen “has his eyes” on the Vikings as a potential landing spot.

Thigpen also has his eyes on Tennessee, Buffalo, Seattle and Arizona according to Darlington. Whether any of those teams are also eyeing him is something I can’t answer right now. He’s certainly not a name with a lot of buzz attached to him. At best he’d give a team like the Vikings an extra inexpensive option to throw into the training camp mix. He’s certainly no one’s idea of an established veteran bridge QB or even much of a back-up option, at least not compared to a guy like Marc Bulger.

I wouldn’t expect a whole lot from Thigpen if the Vikings did sign him, but who knows? Maybe he’s destined to be a late-bloomer. It would be sort of funny and poetic if, years after the now-fired Childress let him go in favor of Brooks Bollinger, he returned and had success.

The Vikings reportedly had a list of 8 quarterbacks they were looking at as candidates to fill in for injured Brett Favre and Tavaris Jackson. This list did not include fan favorites Daunte Culpepper or Jeff Garcia, nor did it feature former Vikings John David Booty and Brooks Bollinger.

It did reportedly include Patrick Ramsey, former Viking Todd Bouman and Luke McCown. In the end, the Vikings settled on Ramsey as the man to bring in.

Ramsey, who last threw an NFL pass in 2008, will have a few practices to now get up to speed with the offense. There is a chance, according to Leslie Frazier, that Ramsey will have to start Monday night. Frazier indicated that his preference would be to start Joe Webb, who is more familiar with the system, but Webb is himself battling a bad hamstring.

I’m guessing not many people, when they looked at the schedule before the season, figured the December 20th Vikings-Bears game would be played at TCF Bank Stadium with the Vikes out of the playoff picture and Patrick Ramsey at quarterback. But, that’s where we are.

Brett Favre was back on the practice field Friday afternoon, gingerly testing out his broken ankle. Meanwhile, the man who would replace him, Tarvaris Jackson, continues to prepare as though he is going to start on Sunday against the Patriots. Whether T-Jack actually gets the starting nod is something we likely won’t know until literally minutes before game time. I have a sneaking suspicion that, if Brad Childress had everything entirely his way, Favre would already be benched and T-Jack would know he was starting. But, as we know, Favre won’t allow anyone else to decide for him when and how his famed consecutive games streak will end; when Favre can no longer continue he will let Childress know, and until then, Chilly just has to stick to Brett’s playbook. Doing things Brett’s way is likely more irksome to Chilly this week than ever before given how Favre played Sunday night against the Packers, but that’s the burden you take on when you elect to join the Brett Favre Traveling Circus.
