Kerry Meier Fined $20,000 For Block That Injured Cullen Loeffler

Even Chris Kluwe might think this is a little excessive. The NFL has fined Falcons’ WR Kerry Meier $20,000 for an illegal blindside block to the head area against the Vikings’ Cullen Loeffler. Kluwe tweeted earlier this week that he thought Meier’s shot, which put Loeffler out for the season, was cheap but legal. The NFL disagrees with Kluwe and has ruled that the block was over the line. The block was not flagged by officials during the game. Loeffler’s injury was not to the head but the lower back.

Once again the NFL proves itself perhaps over-zealous in enforcing its safety-first policies. Meier’s hit was borderline but even if it went a tad over the line, it certainly didn’t warrant a $20,000 fine. Maybe Kluwe will be willing to testify on Meier’s behalf at his appeal hearing. Or maybe not.

Vikings Place Michael Jenkins, 3 Others on IR; Sign 4 Replacements

Injuries have hit the Vikings hard in the second half of the season, and today the team was forced to make several moves as a result. No fewer than 4 players were placed on season-ending IR on Tuesday and 4 players were signed to take their places.

Husain Abdullah (concussion), Michael Jenkins (knee), Cullen Loeffler (back) and Tyrell Johnson (hamstring) are the four being sent to IR. Abdullah has missed several weeks after suffering a concussion, while the other three were all injured in Sunday’s game against the Falcons, Loeffler in somewhat controversial fashion. Abdullah and Johnson are both free agents after the year and may have played their last game in purple (Abdullah probably still has a chance to come back, Johnson not so much). (more…)

Mid-Season Breakdown

The Vikings have played 8 games this year, which, unless math has changed since I was in school, is half of the 16 they are scheduled to play. I guess that means it’s time for a little mid-season breakdown.

So here we go, an alphabetical player-by-player assessment:

Aundrae Allison: Gets deactivated a lot. Still hasn’t won the kick-off return job.

Matt Birk: Matt Birk…he went to Harvard. I never see that commercial anymore. He’s solid.

Brooks Bollinger: Play him Chilly! He’s slightly less sucky than our other quarterbacks.

Vinny Ciurciu: Still can’t pronounce his name. Decent special teams guy.

Ryan Cook: False-start…number 62, offense…five-yard penalty…still second-down.
