The Indianapolis Colts are making sure their 2012 team looks a whole lot different than their 2011 team by cutting many of their top veteran players. Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star reports the Colts have cut ties with linebacker Gary Brackett, running back Joseph Addai, tight end Dallas Clark and safety Melvin Bullitt. Many of those cuts are expensive players on the downside of their career, but Bullitt could be worth a look for the Vikings.

Bullitt fits some of the necessary criteria for a young, rebuilding team looking to fill holes like the Vikings. He is only 27 and heading into the prime of his career. He knows the Vikings’ Tampa 2 defense well having played in it with the Colts for his entire five-year career. Bullitt’s history with the Colts could be even more significant for the Vikings whose head coach, Leslie Frazier, is the Colts former defensive coordinator, and new Vikings’ defensive coordinator, Alan Williams, was the Colts’ defensive backs coach for 10 years. And let’s not forget, the secondary is one of the greatest areas of need for the Vikings.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Bullitt, however, does have one glaring area of concern, he has lost a majority of the past two seasons to right shoulder injuries. Bullitt was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Colts in 2007. He only played in a few games in his rookie year but was a starter by his second season in the league. Bullitt is not known as a great playmaker (he only has seven interceptions in his career), but he is a solid tackler with experience in the cover 2.

The injury risk is certainly there, and it may be enough to keep the Vikings away. But with Bullitt’s injury risk comes a cheap price and more than likely a willingness to sign a short-term deal—the perfect scenario for a team in rebuilding mode.

As long as his shoulder checks out, look for the Vikings to be making calls for Bullitt’s services.

Let’s start with good news: Jeff Saturday and Dallas Clark are both inactive today for the Colts. This weakens Indy’s offense at least somewhat. The Vikings inactives:

Madieu Williams

Marcus McCauley

Maurice Hicks

Drew Radovich

Erin Henderson

Jeff Dugan

Letroy Guiron

McCauley is inactive for the second straight week. He appears to have fallen out of favor with Brad Childress for whatever reason and is beginning to look like he will never live up to the potential he initially showed. Artis Hicks is listed as active but we don’t yet know if he will start. Feel free to discuss in the comments now and throughout the game.

Update: We’re the A-game on CBS…which means Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf. Bryant Gumbel is the absolute worst football announcer not named Kornheiser, but Dierdorf is a close second.

Lots of blitzing so far…Antoine Winfield for the pick!

T-Jack misses another open receiver, then almost gets picked off. Vikings waste a great Adrian Peterson run. How can we ever get momentum when T-Jack kills our drives? Longwell makes it 3-0…should’ve been 7-0.

Awesome defensive series. E.J. Henderson is all over the place. What just freaking happened on the punt?

Adrian Peterson’s first quarter: 8 carries, 72 yards. No touchdowns though. Vikes settle for six because T-Jack can’t throw and Visanthe Shiancoe can’t hold onto the ball once he hits the ground.

Jared Allen’s first sack comes against the TE Santi. No respect for Jared, trying to block him with a tight end.

Injuries are piling up for the Colts. Now they’ve lost Tony Ugoh. Come on Jared…get something going.

Halftime: How do you have a 118-yard first half from your running back yet fail to score a touchdown? When your quarterback is 3/7 for 7 yards (before padding his stats on a pair of throws with the clock running out). When you don’t have a prayer of converting a 3rd down. Maybe T-Jack can pull off one of his signature second half bounce-backs. Thankfully the defense is playing a great game. Peyton Manning is having one of his worst days ever.

The Colts finally deliver the big punch we knew was coming. We need a touchdown now to ice this thing. No more freaking field goals. House it. Or watch Peyton lead some kind of stupid fourth quarter comeback.

T-Jack fumble. Dodged a bullet with the Colts having to settle for a field goal. I repeat the above observation. Wow…missed field goal by Vinatieri. Everything’s going wrong today for Indy.

The defense will have to win this. Adrian can’t run cause they’re flooding the box cause T-Jack can’t complete anything but the occasional slant. Sideline patterns? Deep outs? No chance.

The D-Line is on jello-legs cause the offense can’t get anything going, and now Peyton is tearing us up. And the two-point conversion ties it at 15. Dan Dierdorf can’t understand why people are booing Jackson? What game is he watching?

Why did we give Berrian all that money again?

What happened to the Packers? Second half meltdown much?

Funniest line of the day: “Tarvaris Jackson has to go 98 yards in a minute forty-two. Um, yeah…”

Wow – most idiotic penalty in history by the Colts.

Colts win 18-15. Hideously ugly game. Don’t really know what to say except I think Childress has to be on the hot seat now. The heat needs to be transferred from Tarvaris Jackson – who is just flat-out not any good – to the people who insist on continuing to put him out there. What a joke.

The Vikings make their 2008 home debut against the Colts today at 12 CT on CBS. Both teams are 0-1 coming in, having dropped their respective season openers. The Vikings had a bad first half offensively against the Packers, mostly thanks to Tarvaris Jackson, but rallied in the second half to make a game of it. The Colts, meanwhile, were manhandled at home by the Bears, whose rookie running back Matt Forte made mincemeat of them.

The Vikings need more consistency out of T-Jack and a big game from Adrian Peterson against a Colts D that lost starting nose tackle Ed Johnson to an arrest-related release. And they need a better performance from their allegedly All-World defensive line, and particularly Jared Allen, who tallied no sacks against the Packers. The nightmare scenario: Peyton Manning stands back there, unpressured, and totally picks apart the Vikings’ secondary. Of course there’s a good chance Peyton will be without C Jeff Saturday and TE Dallas Clark (both are game-time decisions). The Colts’ running game was MIA against the Bears and I expect the Vikings to stifle it again this week.
