In other words, Brees’ gashing of the Vikings’ defense today was arguably the most incredible such mauling in the entire long and storied history of professional football.

Was this amazing one-of-a-kind statistical performance more a reflection on Brees or the Vikings’ pass defense? You’ll have to decide that for yourself. I personally learned nothing new today. I knew going in that Brees was great and that the Vikings’ secondary was abysmal. Today’s statistically absurd outcome only reinforced those points.

The Green Bay Packers are no longer undefeated after falling to the Kansas City Chiefs 19-14. Packer fans are no doubt disappointed that their dream of a perfect season has so cruelly fallen apart. In hopes of consoling them, allow me to point out this one fact:

They’re still 13-1. Which is slightly better than 2-12. And they will still probably win the Super Bowl, unless Drew Brees and the Saints ambush them in the playoffs.

If I had money to bet, I would still put it on the Packers to bring home the big prize. Winning every regular season game is a very hard thing to do, which is why only two teams have ever done it. The Packers can now proceed without the undefeated season talk getting on their collective nerves.

Then again, they are kind of banged up on the offensive line. But we know the Packers always overcome injuries. Yeah, I’m sure everything will be okay Packer fans. There’s no reason to be concerned.

Is there?

The Vikings have been competitive in most of their games this year. The three glaring exceptions have been the blow out losses to the Bears and Packers, and today’s game against the Saints. Everyone expected Drew Brees to shred the under-manned Vikings secondary and he didn’t disappoint. Brees finished with 412 yards and 5 TDs on 32-of-40 passing. Brees and the Saints’ offense vs. the Vikings looked like varsity vs. JV. Had Sean Payton not pulled Brees he probably could’ve challenged the all-time single-game passing record of 554 yards. But the Saints had no reason to leave Brees in – they have bigger goals than annihilating a terrible football team in a meaningless late-season game.

Offensively, the Vikings looked utterly inept. Christian Ponder seemed befuddled for most of the day, and got little help from his offensive line, receivers and offensive coordinator. Is it fair to say Ponder took another step back today? Maybe not. But he certainly didn’t play well and people who want to let him off the hook because he’s a rookie are simply blinding themselves to reality. Ponder may one day prove to be a good player but on this day he looked a long way from realizing his potential. There’s nothing wrong with pointing out that obvious truth. (more…)
