A month ago, before the whole “I’m not happy, trade me” talk from Percy Harvin, I had him as a top ten fantasy receiver (barely). Now I’m not so sold. Percy is unquestionably a HUGE part of the Vikings offense and will get his touches receiving or on the ground (pretty much the only receiver you can say that for) but there a number of red flags in drafting him. Obviously the biggest in Harvin’s case, is if he even wants to suit up and play for the Vikings. When most guys playing under their rookie contract demand a trade it’s because the team is unwilling to pay them and they want a new deal. In Harvin’s case it’s something unrelated to money (according to Harvin) and is something team related. Is he upset with being taken off the field constantly (As a Viking fan I love this attitude)? Does he want Webb to be given the opportunity to start at QB? Is he unhappy being on a 4 win team? No one knows but Harvin, but in any case, an unhappy WR is never a good thing.

December 24, 2011; Landover, MD, USA; Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin (12) watches from the bench against the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field.
Technically Harvin has only missed 3 games his whole career but it seems like much more to me. He constantly has some type of aliment week-to-week, which puts him on the injury report somewhere. Since Childress was fired Harvin’s migraines have seemed to go away but there is no telling if they will come back and be an issue. With Harvin unhappy, would it surprise anyone if he feigned migraine if whatever it was that caused him to demand a trade came up again?

With all the negatives stated above there are some positives. With Peterson coming off a devastating injury Harvin is going to get the chance to run the ball around 5+ times a game. Add in the fact that he’s going to have around 12+ targets through the air (good for 8-10 receptions) he becomes extremely valuable in a PPR league. Even if you’re in a standard league he’s still a great fantasy player, good for 8th best WR last year. The receiving corps around him is much better this year so there is a chance one of the rookies turns out to be decent and takes away some targets from Harvin. If that is the case I still look at that as a positive because that makes the team better, which will lessen the odds that Harvin is unhappy and won’t suit up.

A lot of people have Harvin in the late teens to early twenties in their WR rankings which seems a bit ridiculous to me. The guy was a top ten WR last year with a rookie QB behind center, there’s no reason to think he won’t be able to put up a 1000 yard receiving year with a more mature Ponder. He has some red flags but the guy gives it his all every single play and that tells me he will want to play. He’s right around #10 in my rankings but with a lot of people low on Harvin so I think you could get him in the 5th or 6th round.

I just cannot understand how this guy is some people’s 15-20 best fantasy RB for this year. The guy missed four games last year, still finished as the 7th best fantasy RB and you’re going to tell me that there are 15 people better than him this year? Absolute craziness. AP is already up to 100 percent when it comes to running in a straight line, that alone still makes him a top 10 RB. Granted, his cuts aren’t going to be as effective during the first half of the year but there is absolutely no reason to think he can’t be an explosive threat anyways.

Jun 19, 2012; Eden Prairie, MN, USA; Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson (28) runs drills by himself at Vikings Minicamp at Winter Park. Mandatory Credit: Bruce Kluckhohn-US PRESSWIRE

What I stated for Ponder remains true here; the offense is improved from last year and the schedule is favorable. The offensive line can’t be any worse at opening up running lanes than last year and you have to think Kalil will help it out at least a little. Add in some of the new playmakers at wideout and the line of scrimmage just got a lot less crowded. Even if the improvements on offense turn out to minimal, the schedule will help out AP regardless. The Vikings play IND (29th ranked run defense), DET twice (23rd), TEN (24th), WAS (18th), ARZ (21st), TB (32nd), SEA (15th), and STL (31st). You’re telling me AP can’t be a difference maker in those games even if he’s 80% of his normal self?

I’m not saying that AP is the number one fantasy RB this year; Rice, McCoy and Foster are unquestionably better choices, but after those three it’s anybody’s guess. Turner is another year older, Jones-Drew is probably going to miss time in camp due to his contract, Ryan Mathews can’t stay healthy for an entire year and Marshawn Lynch just got a hefty new contract. In other words, just about every RB has some sort of issue that might hold them back this year. Why not roll with someone who has been a consistent force for his entire career?

If you are in a PPR league Peterson’s value is a bit diminished due to the lack of receptions he receives (would it kill Musgrave to run some screens for #28?). Also, if there are no Viking fans in your league and your competitors tend to take advice from the media you might be able to steal Peterson in Round 3 (possibly later). I wouldn’t take Peterson in Round 1 (unless you’re in a 12+ team league) but would target him in the 2nd just to be safe. Overall Peterson is no more risky than the majority of the other running backs, he’s got a lot of things going for him this year and you’ll be able to get him outside the first round for the first time since his rookie year.

Let’s be honest here, there are only two draftable QBs left in these rankings; RGIII and Luck. Unless you’re in a 12 team league there is absolutely no reason to draft any QB’s lower than them. I ranked 23-32 just to be complete but the order is really irrelevant because they are all equally bad choices. With that said, let’s get started.

21. Andrew Luck: I’m one of the few people around that thinks that Luck will be a better fantasy QB this year than RGIII. Luck is as athletic as Griffin, he played in a pro-style offense in college and has better weapons around him than RGIII (Reggie Wayne is still a very good receiver and the Colts went out and drafted him college teammate Coby Fleener and another TE in Dwayne Allen). I expect Luck to take care of the ball this year and stay healthy; both of which I can’t say about Griffin. I wouldn’t be surprised if Luck finished as a top 15 QB, depending on if he can get any type of running game to keep defenses honest. If you draft Aaron Rodgers or any other elite QB, Andrew Luck could be an ideal backup QB. Luck will be playing hard at the end of the year while your normally starting QB might be preparing for the playoffs if their team has clinched a playoff spot.

June 12 2012; Ashburn, VA, USA; Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III (10) throws the ball during Redskins Minicamp at Redskins Park. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-US PRESSWIRE

22. Robert Griffin III: The three biggest red-flags that I see when I look at college QB’s are: durability issues, bad pocket presence and if they played in a wide open spread offence. RGIII could qualify for all three of those issues (durability issues are debatable due to him missing all but 3 games in 2009 due to an ACL tear but not missing any games in 2010 or 2011). His pocket presence is borderline bad and his running ability is over-rated (a 4.3 rushing average in his college career, lower than Newton, Vick and Luck). I’m not saying that Griffin will be a bust but it will take him some time to get use to running an NFL offense which does hurt his fantasy value this year. Someone is no-doubt going to reach for RGIII in your draft and take him in the top 15 of QBs drafted so you will really have to reach to get him. I recommend you wait for Luck rather than reach for Griffin.

23. Sam Bradford: He looked so promising last year after his 3500+ yard passing rookie season but instead produced the worst sophomore lump in recent memory. I have a hunch that he will turn it around but don’t waste a pick on him.

24. Ryan Fitzpatrick: A very good start for Fitzy and an equally awful 2nd half of the year. I think he’ll play like he did during the second half of the season. Sorry Bills fans.

25. Matt Flynn: If the guy can’t separate from Tavaris Jackson in camp I don’t have much faith in him. I wouldn’t be surprised if Russell Wilson ended up stealing this job.

26. Matt Cassel: Cassel managed to have a negative point output week 2 last year against DET. That is quite an accomplishment.

27. ARZ- QB: You would think that some QB on that roster would be able to put up some decent numbers on a team with that many weapons. If someone does manage to have a good game I would definitely pick them up off waivers just in case.

28. NYJ-QB: Mark Sanchez was the 10th best fantasy QB last year. Tim Tebow was the 18th best fantasy QB last year. They’re going to split time this year and end up where they belong.

29. MIA-QB: Matt Moore showed promise last year but Tannehill will be given the job at some point. They are undraftable but one could end up making some wavier-wire noise.

30. TEN- QB: I see Locker getting the job at some point due to Hasselbeck struggling or getting hurt. Once that happens Locker might be of use.

31. CLE- Brandon Weeden: If the Browns had any decent receivers I could see him being a top-20 QB. If Dalton could do it in that division last year, Weeden could do it this year.

32. Blaine Gabbert: He played the majority of the season and only recorded double digit fantasy points 3 times (10, 14 and 12 points were those 3 times). I’ve seen Lingerie Football League QBs with more promise.
