7 Days of Draftsmas: Jon Gruden Likes Percy Harvin

Jon Gruden no longer has a coaching gig in the NFL, leaving him with a lot of free time, which he has been filling by giving his opinions about this year’s draft prospects to anyone who’ll listen. One particular guy Gruden has plenty to say about is Percy Harvin, the Florida wide receiver who would be a solid first-round prospect if only he weren’t a pot-smoking turd with a reputation for being uncoachable that goes back almost to Pop Warner. To say Gruden likes Harvin’s talent would be an understatement; in fact, Gruden seems to almost be packing wood for the kid. The former Buccaneers coach said in a conference call (via the Tampa Tribune):

Percy Harvin is the most dynamic offensive player in this draft. With the ball in his hands, he’s downright scary. If he goes to an Astroturf team like Minnesota or New Orleans, look out. He’s a big reason they’re wearing championship rings in Gainesville.

It’s really easy for Gruden to say that of course, since he isn’t coaching either Minnesota or New Orleans, and therefore won’t be putting his butt on the line by drafting the guy. Funny how brave coaches get after they’re out of the league. Plus, I always thought, if you weren’t a quarterback, Gruden didn’t even know you existed. Guess I was wrong.
