With Sidney Rice, Bernard Berrian, Percy Harvin and Greg Lewis hurt, leaving Greg Camarillo and Hank Baskett as the only healthy wide-outs on the roster, the idea is being floated that preseason legend Joe Webb could switch from his future Hall-of-Fame position of quarterback to fill out the hole in the receiver corps.

As we remember, college quarterback Webb was drafted by the Vikings with the idea of converting him into a wide receiver. Then Brad Childress got a look at Webb’s giant hands and gianter arm and thought to himself, “You know what I’ll do? I’ll play that guy at quarterback after all.”

Since then, Webb has been exclusively a quarterback. He got some snaps in preseason, and demonstrated that if he can’t throw at least he can run. So far during the regular season, he has yet to be activated for a game.

With Brett Favre refusing to quit and Tarvaris Jackson securely situated as the back-up, it seems the only chance Webb has to play this year is at some position other than quarterback. That position would seem to be wide receiver. Or, according to Leslie Frazier…tailback?

Yes, Frazier mentioned the possibility of using Webb at tailback. I’m assuming he means if Adrian Peterson can’t play and Toby Gerhart needs a blow. Doesn’t say much for the Vikings’ other tailback Albert Young, does it?

Webb himself, when asked about playing receiver or tailback or whatever, said he could “run routes if necessary.” He made no promises about being able to catch balls though. That’s called managing expectations.

It’s difficult to imagine even the most optimistic of Viking fans believing the team still has a chance to make the playoffs after Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears. It isn’t just that the Vikings fell to 3-6, it’s the way they lost the game. The team’s two alleged great strengths – the running game and the pass rush – both failed to show up in a must-win contest. Adrian Peterson had his most unproductive performance of the year, rushing for only 51 yards on 17 carries. And the defensive front, despite playing against an offensive line that had been dominated for much of the season, failed to get a consistent rush on Jay Cutler, who spent much of the game standing in the pocket, tearing apart an unbelievably soft Vikings secondary. Had it not been for one idiotically bad pass attempt into the endzone, Cutler would’ve had a brilliant day against the Vikings; as it was, he had a very good day – certainly good enough to defeat a Vikings team that, despite being able to move the ball with fair efficiency at times through the air, found itself once again stymied in the red zone.

We know the Vikings won’t have Randy Moss this weekend, and we have learned they almost certainly will not have Sidney Rice even though they just removed him from the PUP list and he has begun practicing. And now it looks like they will be without Percy Harvin who injured his ankle against the Pats and was “extremely limited” in practice Friday according to Brad Childress.

No Randy. No Sidney. No Percy. With the season on the line Sunday against Arizona, Brett Favre will have Bernard Berrian, Greg Lewis and Greg Camarillo as his top three targets. And of course he will also have Hank Baskett, who is expected to take Randy Moss’ place on the active roster.

But hey, at least we won’t have to worry about any more caterers having their food criticized. That’s something.
