The Vikings have been deep along the defensive line for a couple of years now, thanks to talented second-line players like Letroy Guion, Fred Evans, Jimmy Kennedy and Jayme Mitchell.

That depth has rarely had a chance to show up in games, as the starters have for the most part remained healthy and effective. But, the other advantage to depth is that, when you need draft picks, you can trade off your extra players to get them.

The Vikings today parlayed some of their D-line depth into an extra pick, trading DE Jayme Mitchell to the Cleveland Browns for a late round selection in 2012.

Mitchell, an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi, has progressed steadily since being signed by the Vikings in 2006. So far this season, Mitchell has appeared in 2 games, notching a sack Week 1 against New Orleans. However, with Brian Robison on-board and the team probably wanting to get more of a look at rookie Everson Griffen, Mitchell became expendable.

It’s always sad to see a solid player like Mitchell go, but frankly, he didn’t figure huge in the Vikings’ plans. From Mitchell’s perspective, this is a great opportunity for him to finally get a chance to contribute.

New Vikings safety Madieu Williams may miss up to six weeks with a bad neck. Williams was kept out of the preseason opener against Seattle with what were termed neck spasms – I guess the spasms haven’t stopped spasming. Williams himself could offer no elaboration on the injury:

I’m not allowed to discuss the condition of my injuries. I think that’s something that you’ve got to talk to Coach [Brad] Childress about, or the trainers.

Maybe he needs one of those neck-supporting pillows. Or a nice rubdown from a Geisha girl.

A six week injury would mean no Williams for the first three games of the regular season. Rookie Tyrell Johnson would presumably move up to the starting spot, although the Vikes have some veteran depth back there with Michael Boulware. Is it too late to get Mike Doss on the horn? Looking for the silver-lining: Well, at least Tyrell will get some experience. Here’s the official tally of significant Vikings injuries thus far:

Ray Edwards – back; seems to be okay

Madieu Williams – six weeks with neck

Heath Farwell – season with torn ACL

Jayme Mitchell – season with torn ACL

Pat Williams – bum elbow; should be okay for regular season

Garrett Mills – knee; God knows when he’ll play

Bernard Berrian – being held back in practice because of bad groin

Brian Robison – varicose vein issue, should be back in a couple weeks

Tyrell Johnson -abdominal strain of some kind; should be okay
