Jeff George is 41 years old, and hasn’t thrown a pass in the NFL since 2001, when he played all of two games for the Redskins. By all reasonable measures the dude is finished, kaput, over. Nevertheless, Jeff won’t give up his dream of getting one last chance to prove himself. And he won’t let the Vikings and Brad Childress forget about what he thinks they could’ve had if they’d only given him that shot. George told Yahoo! Sports:

If I was in Minnesota, I guarantee I’d be wearing a ring right now. I just can’t get over why somebody like Brad Childress wouldn’t take a look at me and have me as the third guy on their roster. Put me in and I’ll pick up right where I left off in ’99, but this time with Adrian Peterson, so I wouldn’t have to throw it nearly as much.

There are a lot of things to criticize Chilly for, but one thing he’s done right is laugh off Jeff George. Laugh is the only thing you can do with this guy. Same with Daunte Culpepper. Yeah, both did great things for the Vikings – George in a very limited stint – but the past is the past. I know that. Chilly knows that. The only ones who don’t know it are Jeff and Daunte.

What would it take to get Jay Cutler in purple? Sean Salisbury‘s special friend John Clayton thinks the price (link to podcast) would be at least a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick. And no, John did not merely pull that out of his pasty white troll-butt: He bases it on the last instance of a big-armed QB being traded in his prime. That was Jeff George getting sent from the Colts to the Falcons back in the early ’90s…another example of a quarterback not being able to get along with his coach - Ted Marchibroda in that case – and having to be shipped away. Clayton qualifies this projection by mentioning the Broncos‘ need for a serviceable QB to hold the fort until Josh McDaniels can develop someone new, and their likely desire to receive said QB as part of any Cutler trade. He then mentions six teams as likely destinations, placing the Lions and Browns as front-runners, and the Vikings in the second tier with the Bears, Jets and Buccaneers.

Three draft picks, all 3rd round and higher, would obviously be a lot to give up. What we don’t know yet of course is how hot the market for Cutler will actually be when and if the Broncos officially start shopping him. Character questions could make teams reluctant to give up so much, forcing Denver to lower its price. It all depends on how desperate they really are to get rid of him. I’m assuming they haven’t given up trying to reconcile. That would be a lot easier if Cutler would stop acting like such an over-sensitive punk.

It looks almost 100% certain that you can cross Kurt Warner off the list of potential future Vikings starting quarterbacks. The Cardinals and Warner are rumored to be discussing a two-year contract worth between $18 and $20 million, and Warner has been adamant, in the hours since the team coughed up the Super Bowl to the Steelers, that he will play for Arizona in 2009 or he will go back to bagging groceries. This does, of course, open up a second, possibly intriguing line of speculation: What happens to Matt Leinart and would the Vikings make a run at him if he became available? Personally, I’m about as low on Leinart as you can be: This dude had every chance to snatch the starting job away from Warner, with the same great receivers at his disposal, and couldn’t do it. Plus he seems to suffer from Reggie Bush syndrome – this thing USC stars have about acting like Big Man on Campus even after they’ve left college. Maybe, if Leinart showed that he’d matured and given up the beer bong, I’d consider it. As it stands, there are about 25 guys I’d take before Leinart, including Daunte Culpepper, Jeff George and Brad Johnson.
