Today the Vikings announced the signing of a pair of undrafted free agents: WR Marquis Hamilton of Iowa State and OT Bill Noethlich of Southwest Minnesota State.

As exciting as this news is for those guys, the average Viking fan is probably not all that interested. The only undrafted player anyone wants to hear about is QB Ryan Perrilloux, who was among the hopefuls who participated in this weekend’s tryouts.

Early reviews of Perrilloux’s performance over the weekend indicate that he showed terrific arm strength. Of course, arm strength isn’t really the concern with Perrilloux – it’s the strength of his character everyone is concerned about.

If Perrilloux does manage to catch on with the Vikings, Brad Childress could find himself in the same situation he faced a few years ago when he got to the end of camp with too many quarterbacks, and tried sneaking promising prospect Tyler Thigpen onto the practice squad.

That little maneuver ended up with Thigpen being signed by the Chiefs, and the Vikings having to draft another project QB, who turned out to be John David Booty. Who also did not stick around.

The point being that Brad Childress, for all his talent-assessing acumen and alleged quarterback guru skills, has had an awful difficult time finding a signal-caller who has a shot at being the man over the long-term.

Maybe the best strategy is to wait for the next aging legend to hit the open market and snap him up.

John David Booty had a pretty interesting career with the Vikings. He got drafted, sat for a year on the bench behind Tarvaris Jackson and Gus Frerotte, watched Frerotte leave and probably thought he had a decent shot at being the #2 in 2009…

Saw the team trade for Sage Rosenfels (ugh) then sign Brett Favre (UGH!).

Ended up on the practice squad. Was cut from the practice squad. Was re-signed to the practice squad. Was once again cut from the practice squad…

And, today, was signed to the practice squad…of the Tennessee Titans.

So, at last, J.D. Booty’s long and winding road leads him out of the Vikings’ picture. And out of my life. Forever.

I hope.

Two items of interest from today. #1: Percy Harvin, who has missed practice in past weeks for various reasons, was out again on Wednesday thanks to a shoulder injury suffered during the Rams game. Harvin had a big first half in that game but disappeared in the second half. Now we know why.

#2: John David Booty is really gone, as in gone from the practice squad. Seems crazy now that, at the end of the preseason, we were actually speculating on whether Booty would be kept on the roster. He wasn’t even good enough to stick on the practice squad. He was replaced by tackle Clint Oldenberg.
