In a world where most of the individual press is given to athletes that are getting into trouble for whatever reason, a lot of people don’t realize that most of the guys in league are good guys with a lot to offer as role models, and in the community. I was lucky enough to get to talk to one of these players when Minnesota Vikings second year DB, Josh Robinson, agreed to grant me an interview.

.

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

.

.

Hey Josh!

I want to thank you again for taking the time to do this, I along with everyone at The Viking Age are excited to have a little insight into your world as it pertains to the Vikings. So let’s get started…

.

TVA: As I’m sure you are aware there’s going to be quite a few new face’s around when you report back to Winter Park, What offseason acquisition are you most excited about getting to work with this season?

.

JR21: I’m excited about all the new help we acquired, looking very promising!

.

TVA: Obviously this young secondary will miss the presence of someone like Antoine Winfield, what are some of the things that you learned from him that you use to help develop your game, and that you can also pass along to someone like Xavier Rhoades who’s just coming into the league?

.

JR21: well I think in time I’ll know what type of areas he need help in and when, or if the things Antoine has taught me are useful I will share!

.

TVA: You grew up down in Florida and played your high school and college ball down there, after this season it looks like you guys will be playing outdoors in the FRIGID Minnesota winters for two years, are you ready for that?

.

JR21: right now probably not, but by that time Lord willing I hope so!

.

TVA: I think that with both you, and Harrison Smith going into your second years, along with additions like Sharrif and Xavier, that this has the potential to be a top ten defense, whats one area you think this defense MUST improve on to reach that goal?

.

JR21: I think consistency is key for us we have shown some good things last year and if we are consistent then we can be THE top Defense!

.

TVA:You had a good rookie season, and i think 2013 could be a breakout year for you. Whats one area of your game that you want to improve on the most from 2012 to 2013?

.

JR21: technique. I want to become better with my technique in all areas! A technician!

.

TVA: Conventional wisdom says that Cordarelle Patterson will handle the bulk of kick returns, but we all know you are beyond fast and can also do some special things with the ball in your hands, are going to be in Coach Priefer’s ears trying to get some reps in the return game as well?

.

JR21: definitely!

.

TVA: I know you bring your own skill set to the table, but is there any player in the league that you most look up too and maybe try to model your game after?

.

JR21: I try to grow by watching all DB’s, no one guy in particular! My all time favorite player was Brian Dawkins! Loved the way he played the game!

.

TVA: I agree! Dawkins Just looked intimidating lurking back there. Now, you guys open up the season on the road in Detroit, against Megatron and the Lion’s, he’s just one of many big name recievers you will go up against this year. Is there one particular WR you are most looking forward to going against this year? (I personally am looking forward to seeing you guys try to lock down Dez Bryant!)

.

JR21: both of those guys are great WR’s but I’m excited just to have another year Lord willing of playing in the NFL and look forward to all the top receivers this year!

.

TVA: From everything I know about you, you seem to be a real respectable, humble guy. I know you’re a family man, and you’re also a very outspoken man of God. Do these personal traits help you in your professional life as player at all? If so, how?

.

JR21: Well because of God those things can be said, without Him I couldn’t be in this position so yes it helps me as a professional player!

.

TVA: Finally, as you know there are some lofty expectations for this team going into the season, and we all know what a competitive division the NFC north is. Whats it going to take for the Vikings to win this hyper-competitive division?

.

JR21: show up playing good ball week in and week out! As I said earlier, consistency!

.

TVA : Again, on behalf of myself along with everyone at TheVikingAge.com, thanks for taking some time out of your day to let those of us out here in Viking land get to be a little more familiar with you as a player and a person, it’s been a pleasure!

.

JR21: thanks for having me, good questions I appreciate the interest and opportunity!

.

I really look forward to seeing what this kid can do in his second season, I think that with him, Xavier, Chris Cook, Sanford and Harrison Smith the Vikings have a secondary in place that can compete with the explosive passing attacks in the NFC North.

With former Minnesota Vikings CB Antoine Winfield signing with the Seattle Seahawks, the team is dangerously thin at cornerback with its locker room leader being released in a salary cap move in March.

Jan 01, 2013; Jacksonville, FL, USA; Northwestern Wildcats wide receiver Tony Jones (6) cannot make a catch as he is defended by Mississippi State Bulldogs defensive back Darius Slay (9) during the second half of the game in the Gator Bowl at EverBank Field.
The Vikings already had plans to limit Winfield’s snaps going into the 2013 season and make him a part-time player with the anticipation that the trio of Chris Cook, Josh Robinson and AJ Jefferson would be in a battle to earn the two outside starting corner spots.

Both Cook and Jefferson are eligible to become unrestricted free agents after the 2013 season ends making the cornerback position an area that needs to be addressed either in the 2013 Draft/Free Agency or the 2014 off-season.

With the Vikings playing a zone-based scheme that emphasizes corners (ideally that are bigger with exciting speed) that can press/jam receivers OTL and attack ball-carriers out of the backfield. This gives the Vikings the ability to not use a first round draft pick on a top flight “shut down” corner that would shadow elite receivers. Even though the fan base may want a cornerback in the first round to replace Winfield, who did play at a very high level in 2013, the need to “fix” the position group may not be that dire in the minds of the Vikings front office with the young, developing talent the roster current has in place.

Outside of the two 2013 NFL Draft picks the team has (#23 & #25) the Vikings have the 52nd overall pick in the second round of the draft. That pick or possibly the 83rd pick in the third round of the draft could be used to build the depth of the position and even provide a challenger to replace any of the three top options currently on the roster.

The Vikings have the added benefit that the 2013 crop of draft prospect at cornerback is deeper than other positions. While players with the size/speed combo plus that ability to play in our scheme like UConn’s Blidi-Wreh Wilson or Dwayne Gratz, Boise State’s Jamar Taylor or Rutgers’ Logan Ryan could be available in the late second round I think that one of the “hot” names on draft boards could be our selection with the 52nd overall pick. That player is Mississippi State’s Darius Slay, who confirmed to me that he attended the Minnesota Vikings “Top 30” prospect event earlier this month at Winter Park.

Feb 25, 2013; Indianapolis, IN, USA; South Carolina Gamecocks defensive back Darius Slay jumps to stretch his legs before he runs the 40 yard dash during the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Slay (6’0, 192) broke out to a degree in his senior season, with five interceptions, six pass breakups and 40 total tackles on the way to earning All-SEC Second Team honors. He college teammate and fellow CB Johnthan Banks is the better known prospect in draft circles, it is Slay that took his improved senior season then blew up at the NFL Combine with the best 40-yard dash time among defensive backs (4.36 seconds). His measurables and late-rising draft stock are eerily similar to 2012 third-round draft pick Josh Robinson (5’10, 199) who was an under-the-radar pick even after he ran a CB-best 4.33 forty at the NFL Combine. Slay has both the quickness and straight-line speed that NFL teams covet and has a penchant for 50-50 balls. Slay, like Robinson, has experience as a kick returner which the Vikings could use with the loss of Percy Harvin. He needs to improve against the run and show more aggressiveness in that area but has shown a willingness to play the run.

While Slay is still a raw prospect with upside it seems I am not the only one that sees his potential with his attendance at the “Top 30” event. It is worth noting that his college teammate and fellow CB prospect Johnthan Banks was not in attendance at the event per Slay. Vikings GM Rick Spielman does seem to have an apparent affinity for drafting college teammates that play in the same position group (Notre Dame Safeties Harrison Smith & Robert Blanton and Arkansas Wide Receivers’ Greg Childs & Jarius Wright) Slay didn’t lead me to believe the Vikings are looking to add both CBs in the this draft but we all know how Spielman likes to be secretive and/or create smoke screens. Regardless of if we get the college teammates, Slay’s ball skills and quickness make him a nice fit for Minnesota’s base Cover-2 scheme in round two or later of the NFL Draft.

Jared Allen

Allen has underachieved this season after leading the league in sacks the previous year. Currently, he has seven sacks on the season. The Packers are second in the league in giving up sacks with 38. Last week should’ve been Allen’s opportunity to have multiple sacks, but the Bears beefed up their line with some tight end and running back chip blocks. With Rodgers getting into a groove with receivers Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson, it is absolutely necessary that the Viking defensive line is on its game and that starts with Allen. When Allen gets pressure it allows for the entire defense to play better. The Vikings are 4-2 when Allen has at least one sack and out of those wins the opposing team has at least one turnover. Forcing Rodgers to throw early will allow the secondary to play tight to the receivers.

Vikings secondary

I pick the entire secondary because the Packers throw all over the place.

The chemistry between the Rodgers and his two favorite targets, Cobb and Nelson is deadly. The Vikings are still without Chris Cook and will need rookie, Josh Robinson and Veteran Antoine Winfield to play big. Nelson is a big target at six foot three and may be a problem for the Vikings smaller corners. Winfield is listed and five foot nine and Robinson is listed at five foot ten. I imagine that Robinson will cover the speedy Cobb and Nelson will be seeing some help over the top. The Vikings have improved their 26th ranked secondary from last season and are now 13th. They have reduced its pts. per game average by 6. The Packers have the 14th ranked pass offense, but with Rodgers slinging the ball like he is right now they are dangerous from anywhere. The Vikings need to key in on those two receivers. Jennings will be back on the field; however, it is unsure how much he will contribute to the offense. If Jennings is really back at 100 percent, then the Vikings are in for a lot more than they thought.
