Vikings Begin Defensive Coaching Changes by Firing Karl Dunbar

The purge has begun. Per KFAN’s Common Man Dan Cole, the Vikings have canned defensive line coach Karl Dunbar. Under Dunbar’s leadership, beginning in 2006 when he came on-board with Brad Childress, the Vikings consistently fielded one of the best D-lines in the league. Pat Williams’ decline and ultimate departure diminished the team’s rush defense dominance, but even without Fat Pat the Vikings had one of the better front fours in the league in 2011. Much of that can of course be credited to Jared Allen who challenged Michael Strahan’s sack record, finishing with 22.

Dunbar’s sacking is just the first in what is expected to be a string of defensive staff changes. Defensive coordinator Fred Pagac’s pink slip should be coming soon. The Vikings may already have Pagac’s replacement lined up in the person of Raheem Morris, who Rick Spielman confirms will be interviewing for a job.
