Last off-season, free agent T.J. Houshmandazdeh visited the Vikings only to spurn them in favor of the Seattle Seahawks.

A year later, it looks like Housh has become a Viking after all.

According to a report from Fox6 Sports in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (of all places), the Vikings have signed Houshmandzadeh just hours after he was cut by the Seahawks.

The Houshmandzadeh signing comes just minutes after we learned, to our surprise, that the Vikings elected to cut WR Javon Walker, who seemed a lock to make the team after the waiving of WR Logan Payne.

The second Javon was cut, everyone assumed another move was afoot. That move, it appears, has turned out to be the one-year delayed signing of Houshmandzadeh.

Last year with Seattle, Housh caught 79 passes for 911 yards and 3 TDs. This was considered a disappointing season after the large free agent contract the receiver signed.

If this report is true, Housh joins a Viking receiver corps that will be without Sidney Rice for the first six weeks of the season, has somewhat of a health question mark in migraine-prone Percy Harvin and, given Bernard Berrian‘s shaky production, lacks a true #1.

Housh is probably not a #1 himself at this time, but he certainly represents an upgrade over Javon Walker or Logan Payne. The big concern right now is that, even with Houshmandzadeh’s addition, the Vikings lack a genuine deep threat.

So I guess Sidney Rice wasn’t malingering after all.

According to a Star-Trib report, the wide receiver underwent surgery Monday on his bad hip. He is expected to be sidelined for the first half of the regular season.

Before this disheartening development, there had been speculation that Rice’s hip wasn’t as bad as he was letting on and he was only using the injury as an excuse to miss camp and also protest his contract. In defense of those of us who went down this unfair road: His agent is Drew Rosenhaus. When Rosenhaus is involved, you assume hanky-panky.

In this case, it was wrong to assume. So, Sorry Sidney.

And now that I’ve said I’m sorry, I’m going to bash you.

You had all off-season to get the hip dealt with, Sidney, but you waited until this late date to have the surgery – a surgery several doctors reportedly recommended to you at various points during the summer – and now you’re going to be out for half the season. What were you waiting for? The fairy dust to do its magic?

Let’s look at our receiver corps without you in the fold Sid: Bernard Berrian, who may or may not be #1 material at this point. Percy Harvin, who could puke and drop at any moment. Greg Lewis…ha. Logan Payne…ha. Maybe Javon Walker, if the team ever gets around to signing him. Darius Reynaud shifted back from running back. Jaymar Johnson…oh wait, no. Marko Mitchell?

I’m stopping now before I get any more depressed.

Then again, maybe there’s no reason to be depressed. Because we still have Brett Favre at quarterback, and we know what Brett Favre does with no-name wide receivers. That’s right: he makes them into name wide receivers.

He did it with Rice last year, and he can do it this year with…Logan Payne. Or Marko Mitchell. Or Taye Biddle.

Okay, we’re screwed.

When he’s an old man, Jaymar Johnson can tell his grandkids he once got dumped to make room for Brett Favre. Today the receiver was placed on the waived/injured list, and Favre was officially promoted to the active roster.

Those stories for the grandkids are down the road though. Today, Jaymar is just another marginal NFL player without a team.

Sadly for Johnson, an injury contributed to his becoming odd-man-out in the roster shuffle. The receiver broke his thumb being tackled during a punt return on Saturday, and will reportedly need surgery that will keep him out 6-8 weeks.

As crappy as this is for Jaymar, I’m sure guys like Logan Payne, Marko Mitchell and Taye Biddle aren’t shedding any tears. One of those three now looks to have the inside track on nailing down the 5th receiver spot. Payne would appear to be the front-runner after his performance Saturday night.

Oh, and now those guys get a chance to play with Brett Favre too. More stories for more grandkids.
