Marcus McCauley didn’t have to wait long to find a new gig. Less than a day after being waived by the Vikings, the former third-round draft pick has been picked up by the Detroit Lions.

McCauley wasn’t good enough to crack a Minnesota cornerback rotation that includes penalty-prone Benny Sapp, newly-acquired Karl Paymah and rookie Asher Allen. But he is considered a talented player who, in the right system, could excel.

Unfortunately he is now with the Lions, where the words “defense” and “excel” seldom wind up in the same sentence.

Jason LaCanfora has the first scoop of cutdown day, and it is about a quarterback. No, Sage Rosenfels has not been cut, nor has Tarvaris Jackson been traded. Nor has Brett Favre decided to retire again.

The scoop is that the Vikings have placed John David Booty on waivers.

It’s easy enough to figure out the Vikings’ other moves: keep both T-Jack and Sage, hope Booty clears waivers and re-sign him to the practice squad. No idea how Friday night’s “embarrassing” (Chilly‘s word) Sage and Booty performances figured in to this decision. Clearly, Jackson was the second best quarterback in preseason, and probably deserves the back-up slot.

I still think they should’ve traded him, but whatever.

Update: David Herron and Ian Johnson have felt the wrath. Johnson may return to the practice squad, per Scoggins.

Update: Garrett Mills is gone. Bill Belichick can have him back now if he wants him. Nehemiah Broughton and Martail Burnett are also gone. How close are we to 53 now?

Full cut list courtesy of Vikings.com:

DB Colt Anderson, QB John David Booty, FB Nehemiah Broughton, DE Martail Burnett, OL Chris Clark, OL Brian Daniels, OL Juan Garcia, DE Otis Grigsby, S De’von Hall, LB David Herron, DT Antoine Holmes, RB Ian Johnson, DT Tremaine Johnson, OL Andy Kemp, CB Marcus McCauley, TE Garrett Mills, WR Nick Moore, TE Jake Nordin, WR Vinny Perretta, OL Drew Radovich, DB Marcus Walker and WR Bobby Williams.

Drew Radovich and Marcus McCauley are the only two semi-surprises. Erin Henderson and Darius Reynaud were on the bubble and made it.

Sean Jensen of the Pioneer-Press just tweeted (did I mention I’m also on Twitter?) that the Vikings have cut cornerback Charles Gordon. We of course recall Gordon’s one memorable 2008 moment – that awful-looking broken ankle he suffered while returning a punt against the Packers. Gordon missed the rest of the season after that, but was primed for a comeback attempt with the Vikes this training camp. Sadly, that will not happen now. Evidently, the Vikes are happy with Benny Sapp and Marcus McCauley as the two main guys competing for the nickelback position, unless another move is forthcoming.

Update: Judd Zulgad tweets that Gordon was cut after failing a physical. More than one wise-ass has already pointed out that this opens up a roster spot for you know who.
