Just a little tidbit courtesy of Don Banks of SI.com. This was dropped in the middle of Banks’ mock draft. Banks has the Vikings taking Matt Kalil at 3 – nothing like going out on a limb – but says:

The Vikings will happily take either Kalil or LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne with their first-round pick, but they’d rather make their selection at No. 4 and pick up an extra third-round pick for their trouble. I just don’t see it happening. If the Browns have Ryan Tannehill fever, they’re hiding it pretty well so far.

Two things about that blurb. One, no way the Vikings take Morris Claiborne #3, so forget about that part. Two, only way this trade happens is if the Browns think the Dolphins might leapfrog them all the way to 3. Otherwise why not just stay at #4 and take Tannehill (if you even want him)? Why cough up any pick if you can sit still and take your guy? Seems to me if the Browns are worried about losing Tannehill, they ought to be willing to give up more than a 3rd rounder. If all Rick Spielman can get is a 3rd rounder…well, people are going to think he didn’t hold out for enough.

If I’m the Browns I’m calling all bluffs on this. I’m staying at 4. I’m betting Tannehill will be there (if I even want Tannehill). I’m betting the Dolphins won’t cough up the picks to move up to 3. I’m keeping my 3rd rounder and telling Spielman to get bent. Easy for me to say when all I’ve got riding on this is a tiny shred of credibility I probably don’t even have to begin with.

Most Viking fans were over-the-rainbow with happiness when Brad Childress got fired as head coach after starting the 2010 season 3-7. It’s a safe bet Miami Dolphins fans are not experiencing an equal sense of jubilation at the news that Childress will be interviewed on Saturday for that team’s vacant offensive coordinator position.

Then again, maybe Dolphin fans like the idea of bringing in an OC who is known for favoring a grinding, run-first brand of the ancient West Coast over anything remotely resembling a 21st century offense?

Childress himself broke the news of his impending interview to the Star Tribune. “I don’t have any preconceived notions,” Childress said. “If there’s a good opportunity there with good people, and that’s the key, I’ll coach again this year. If not then I’ll pass and do something next year.”

Under Childress, the Vikings became a top defensive team – largely thanks to the hiring of Mike Tomlin and then Leslie Frazier as defensive coordinator – and an adequate, rather boring offensive one. But that all changed in 2009 when the addition of Brett Favre and the emergences of Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin transformed the tedious Chillyball operation into a dynamic TD-scoring machine.

Things took a big step backward in 2010 though, thanks to a combination of factors including Brett Favre’s drop-off, Rice’s injury, the disintegration of the offensive line and Childress’ inability to compensate for these problems either through personnel moves or game plan tweaks. Chilly’s woeful inadequacy in the face of disaster – plus that whole mess with Randy Moss – prompted Zygi Wilf to can him ten games into the season and replace him with Leslie Frazier who has since been given the full-time head coaching job.

My only advice to Tony Sparano and the Dolphins? If you do hire Childress, don’t let him call the plays. Ask Andy Reid and Brett Favre why.

Clearly, the Vikings don’t believe Javon Walker is the answer to their wide receiver problem. Which is why the team just made a trade with the Dolphins to acquire wide-out Greg Camarillo (this from Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald).

Camarillo looks, on the surface, like a nice pick-up for the Vikes. Last year, his fourth in the pros, he caught 50 balls for 550 yards. In 2008, he caught 55 for 613 yards and 2 TDs in only 11 games (before an ACL injury did him in).

Now we just need to see how he fits into the offense. One scouting report I saw described him as “the poor man’s Wes Welker,” which leads one to believe he would be best used as a slot-possession type guy. It makes sense for the Vikes to pick up that sort of receiver, since Percy Harvin will now be moving outside after the loss of Sidney Rice, and there’s no one else on the roster who seems a reasonable candidate to make those tough third-down catches out of the slot like Percy did.

It’s doubtful that Camarillo will make us forget Sidney Rice, but at least now we have another receiver on the roster besides Bernard Berrian and Harvin who has actually performed reasonably well in recent years. Unfortunately, Camarillo has also been plagued by groin problems this offseason. But we know the Vikes wouldn’t pick him up if they didn’t think he was healthy.

<del datetime="2010-08-25T17:09:44+00:00">In case you’re wondering, I haven’t seen yet what the Vikings are giving back to the Dolphins. I’m sure that information will be along shortly.</del>

Update: PFT says a cornerback is going back to Miami for Camarillo, probably Benny Sapp. No shock given the way Sapp tumbled on the depth chart with the rise of Asher Allen and arrival of Chris Cook. The Vikings appear to have traded from strength to shore up a weakness.
