Ray Rivard of Lombardi Ave. discusses all things Packers for this week’s installment of Five Questions…

TVA: The defense has to be a concern for everyone in Packerland right now, right? Or do you guys figure you can just outscore everyone the rest of the way?

LA: Well, for anyone who follows that Packers, yes, the defense is a huge concern. How can this team continue to rely so heavily on its offense to score 30-plus points the entire season? It can’t. One of these weeks, the offense is going to throw a stinker and the team will lose because of it.

I don’t know, maybe that’s the best thing for the Packers … maybe the defense needs a wake-up call. All we know is that the right combination hasn’t been dialed up as yet on the defensive side of the ball. Yes, they are an opportune bunch and have week-in, week-out come up with the big play … the fumble recovery, the interception, the stop. But we all know the clock is ticking on this unit and this team.

Does the defense let the team down this week? Or next at Detroit? Or the next at the N.Y. Giants? We don’t know, but it’s bound to happen unless they can return to somewhat of a semblance of what they were last year.

All I know, is that we don’t want that equation to catch up to the Packers in January.

The Ol’ Bag of Donuts crew was nice enough to once again share their Packer knowledge with The Viking Age. We began this week’s Q&A with a question about the quarterbacks:

TVA: Brett Favre faces down his former back-up Aaron Rodgers for (presumably) the final time this weekend. Who has the better game?

Ol’ Bag Of Donuts: Unless you are looking at this game through green-tinted glasses, Packer fans should know that Favre will give it everything he has left to win this game, even if it costs him the rest of the season. Fortunately for the Packers, that may be a good thing. Favre is banged up and making a lot of costly mistakes this season and it is hard to imagine he can play much better than he did in Green Bay a month ago. If he tries to force things and take more chances, it will cost him.

On the flip side, you have a man who has yet to win in the dome. Rodgers hasn’t been bad this year, but he certainly has not lived up to the preseason hype so far this year. He has uncharacteristically made some poor throwing decisions that have resulted in interceptions. However, he is coming coming off arguably his best game of the season (granted it was against the lowly Cowboys) and also a bye week. He will have two weeks to prepare for the Vikings and I think that will help greatly since he hasn’t played his best in Minnesota. I think with the extra week preparation and the fact he is healthy I will give the edge to Rodgers of having a better game. I think he will take fewer chances and in turn make less mistakes than Favre on Sunday. You would be foolish to think that is an absolute that Favre will fall apart on Sunday since it may be his last meaningful football game of his career, but Rodgers is still the safer bet.

The Packers‘ transition from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense was always going to be a difficult one, but the Green Bay coaching staff at least hoped their players would help smooth it some by being on-board for it. Hope dashed:

Aaron Kampman did nothing Thursday to quell speculation that he’s not overly thrilled about his role in the Green Bay Packers’ new defense.

The former defensive end who is converting to outside linebacker in the new 3-4 defense continued his media boycott. The eight-year veteran has not granted any interviews since coach Mike McCarthy revamped his defense by hiring Dom Capers as defensive coordinator in January to replace the fired Bob Sanders.

A team spokesman said Kampman originally planned to address reporters after Thursday’s organized team activity practice — the first session open to the media — but Kampman changed his mind and never appeared in the locker room. Kampman also declined to speak to reporters at the team’s Fan Fest in March.

For the first seven years of his NFL career, Kampman played defensive end in a 4-3 scheme and accumulated 50½ sacks while starting 95 of the 103 games he appeared in. Along the way, the former fifth-round draft pick signed a four-year, $21 million contract extension and made a pair of Pro Bowls (2006 and 2007).

Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel posted several tweets from minicamp yesterday, ominous tweets for Packer fans like:

Ted Thompson is talking with fans and signing autographs. That might be more awkward than kampman in pass coverage

and:

Aaron Kampman refused to talk again about his switch to OLB. Packers even urged him to talk. There’s a problem there. Big time.

But I’m sure this will all be worked out by the start of the season. Wrong. The Packers are going to have to do something with Aaron Kampman, and that something is trade him. Sorry the whole 3-4 thing is already turning out to be a disaster. Should be fun watching AD run through the Green Bay defense like they were bop bags.
