It just gets weirder. Now Jason La Canfora is reporting the Vikings and Redskins have the parameters of a deal in place for Donovan McNabb, and all the remains to make the deal happen is the Vikings working out a restructured contract with McNabb who under his current deal is owed way too much money for any sane team to pay ($12 million or thereabouts).

If this is all a Mike Shanahan ploy, it’s a great ploy that involves using multiple reporters from various outlets as stooges. I think I’m going to have to start believing in the legitimacy of this story. On the surface it still looks like the Vikings would be better off waiting for McNabb to be cut but maybe there’s something here we’re all missing.

Nothing’s confirmed yet obviously and this could still turn out to be baloney. But as of now it looks very possible that the Vikes will open the season with Donovan McNabb at quarterback.

Everyone agrees this makes no sense. Zero. Zippo. Zilch. Nada. Other words in other languages that mean “zero.”

According to an ESPN report given by Adam Schefter on NFL Live and now delivered in handy online form for those who can’t stand watching Schefter’s lips while he talks, the Vikings are among several teams who have called the Washington Redskins about trading for Donovan McNabb.

There’s no shock frankly that the Vikings would be interested in McNabb, given their need for a veteran QB and McNabb’s need to get the heck out of Washington. What is shocking is that Minnesota or any other team would offer anything to the Redskins in a trade when the Skins will surely cut McNabb before having to pay him any of his $12 million contract for 2011, making it possible for the team that wants him to then sign him without giving up a draft pick.

Pretty much everyone commenting on Twitter, from the beat writers down the lowliest football fan goof, is scratching their heads over this one. Some speculation holds that there isn’t actually any interest from the Vikings and this talk about them and “several teams” calling Washington is some trick to drum up a market that doesn’t otherwise exist.

If indeed Mike Shanahan is trying some shenanigans to trick the Vikings or anyone else into dealing for McNabb…well, I just hope Rick Spielman is smart enough to call Shanny on his bluff. Personally, I don’t think there’s a lick of truth to this story but we’ll wait and see. Maybe the Vikings really are that desperate to get a veteran, and maybe McNabb is their guy and they’re worried someone else will make a play for him.

I wouldn’t mind having McNabb, but I don’t want to see the team get fleeced in the process of acquiring him.

The love-affair between Jay Cutler and Chicago fans may still be in its first flushes, but the relationship between Cutler and his organization is already speeding straight for the rocks.

This has nothing to do with Cutler being a pussy either…in fact, the problem is exactly the opposite. Cutler has too much balls for his own good.

Most guys, if they are new to an organization, just try to come in, keep a low profile, do their job and hope to earn respect. Not Cutler though. In his world, if he’s the high-priced quarterback, he gets to start making demands right off the bat.

And what does Cutler demand from the Bears, a team he hasn’t even played a single game for yet, much less led to anything resembling success?

Oh, nothing much. Just a say in the final roster.

“Oh yeah,” Cutler said when asked if he would offer input into personnel decisions. “I think they’re definitely going to ask me. If they don’t ask me, I’m going to tell them what I think because I’ve got to be the one throwing to them on game day, and I’ve got to trust them.”

And what happens if they don’t ask him? What happens if they don’t listen to what he thinks?

I’m sure Jay will take that in stride. Just like he handled those perceived snubs from Josh McDaniels. Just like he handled the Broncos firing Mike Shanahan without consulting him.

Everyone owes Jay Cutler an apology: this guy is definitely not a pussy. He has brass ones.

Not sure about his brains though.
