Williams brings 10 years of experience coaching defensive backs (good), long experience with the Tampa-2 or Cover-2 or whatever the hell you wanna call that defense (good or bad depending on your point-of-view) and…I’m sure there’s a third thing he brings but I can’t think of it right now.

Jason La Canfora says the Vikes have requested permission to speak with Williams, who has been the DB coach in Indy for 10 years. If the Vikes get the go-ahead to speak with Williams, the interview should take place Tuesday morning.

Williams has no prior defensive coordinator experience, though he was considered a candidate for the Bears’ DC position going into 2010. Before going to Indy he served as a defensive assistant with Tampa Bay. Yup, another Cover-2 guy. That should make him attractive to Leslie Frazier. What makes him attractive to me is the fact that he’s not Mike Singletary. The Vikings’ willingness to interview all these various candidates with Cover-2 experience should tell us two things: 1) They don’t want to switch to 3-4. 2) They’re not interested in promoting Singletary.

Stay tuned on this one.

On Friday the Vikings finally pulled the trigger on the defensive coordinator, ending weeks of non-suspense. Pagac was offered the chance to stay on as linebackers coach but it’s not yet known if he’ll accept. Current LB coach Mike Singletary is believed to be a candidate to take over for Pagac as DC.

Pagac’s legacy as defensive coordinator is one of failure and slow disintegration. This wasn’t entirely Pagac’s fault. A lot of bad crap happened to the defense in 2011, including a ton of injuries, a bunch of aging players going over the cliff, Chris Cook getting himself unofficially suspended with pay after a domestic assault and just overall undisciplined play. Pagac himself came under fire after it was revealed that on more than one occasion his players ignored his instructions, instead calling their own plays in the huddle. Leslie Frazier was on at least two occasions forced to take over play-calling duties from Pagac.
