We already knew this, but now it’s official: Brett Favre is not going to play tonight against the Eagles.

Favre suffered a concussion in his heroic start last Monday night (which now feels like fifteen years ago). Per NFL rules, Favre was subjected to several concussion tests during the week, and reportedly failed to pass even the preliminary ones, making his deactivation for tonight’s game a foregone conclusion.

Despite the 100% impossibility of Favre playing, some still held out hope. Why? Because there’s not much else for Viking fans to root for.

Joe Webb will makes his first NFL start, barring a last second change-of-heart by Leslie Frazier. Patrick Ramsey figures to be the back-up QB.

Indications are that Brett Favre will play tonight at frozen, snowbound TCF Bank Stadium against his age-old rivals the Chicago Bears. But, if for some reason the plan changes and Favre is unable to go, don’t worry about the Vikings quarterbacks-wise. They have plenty of others to choose from.

There’s Joe Webb, who was going to start tonight until Favre intervened. Then there’s Patrick Ramsey who was signed last week to back-up Webb. Oh, and there’s also R.J. Archer, whom the Vikings activated from the practice squad to be their emergency third QB (you know, before Favre’s arm suddenly healed).

But wait, that’s not all. Today, the QB-rich (in numbers if not ability) Vikings also signed Rhett Bomar off the Giants‘ practice squad. The Newark Star-Ledger reports that Bomar is on his way to Minnesota this afternoon to join the Vikings. Cause he really likes snow.

No, you’re not imagining things: that’s five quarterbacks. I’m assuming they won’t all be active for tonight’s game, cause that would be totally screwed-up, but then again, these are the 2010 Vikings we’re talking about.

Monday was the night Brett Favre‘s consecutive games streak officially reached its point of termination. It was also likely the night Tarvaris Jackson‘s Minnesota Vikings career came to an end.

Nothing is official yet, but it certainly looks for all the world like T-Jack has played his last down for the Vikings. Today the team is expected to put him on IR with turf toe, ending his 2010 season. After the year he will become a free agent, and it is unlikely that the Vikings will bid to once again procure his services.

Jackson was abysmal in his apparent final appearance with the Vikings, going 15-of-30 for 118 yards, no touchdowns and a pick. The week before against the Bills he was occasionally brilliant, but sullied his own performance with a couple of bad interceptions.

By placing Jackson on IR, the Vikings reduce their quarterback options for Monday night to a blue-handed Brett Favre, a green-around-the-gills Joe Webb and a cold-off-the-street Patrick Ramsey. Whoever plays will have the pleasure of facing Julius Peppers and the Chicago Bears on a rock-hard frozen surface in temperatures below 20 degrees at TCF Bank Stadium.
