Randy Moss will be a one-and-done as a 49er. Mike Florio reports that San Francisco has no interest in re-signing Moss for 2013. Florio believes that, despite Randy’s outward display of contentment, he was privately irritated by his small role in the offense. Moss caught only 28 balls all season for 434 yards and 3 TDs. He was never utilized much as a deep threat even after the team switched from Ponder-like Alex Smith to strong-armed Colin Kaepernick.

Moss himself has basically confirmed the Niners’ non-interest. He tweeted, “Wished we could’ve finished the job!! thanks for the opportunity (and) good luck in the future 9ers.”

So with San Francisco in the rearview mirror, what might be next for Moss? Could a return to Minnesota be in the cards for the Vikings legend?

Short answer: No effing way.

An argument could’ve maybe been made for bringing Moss back last year as a low-cost reciving option. Because we still had hopes that Moss might be at least a shadow of his former self. But now we know Moss is not even a shadow of a shadow. Maybe he still has enough speed to get downfield but he has clearly lost any inclination to fight for balls or even make much of an effort. Even in the Super Bowl, Moss short-armed some balls.

So physically he’s declined. And he’s mentally not always engaged. And he privately clashed with coaches over his role last year even though even he must’ve realized a limited role was all he really had in him. Delusional much?

Randy Moss in the prime of his career was a headache. That’s why the Vikes traded him away in the first place. Now he has nothing left. And let’s be real about this: You’re trying to get Percy Harvin to stay around. You could argue that cause might be helped by signing his pal Moss. But do you really want Moss around influencing Harvin? Doesn’t Harvin already have enough Moss in him?

Bringing Moss back would serve no useful purpose. It would just create a distraction the team doesn’t need. And you certainly wouldn’t want Moss and Harvin doubling up on Christian Ponder in the locker room. Poor Ponder might have a nervous breakdown.

No. No. A thousand times no. But thanks for the memories Randy. We’ll always love you.

Randy Moss will indeed be on the field for the 49ers tonight when they face off against the Vikings in scintillating preseason action, but word has come down that Moss will not be in the starting lineup. Ted Ginn and Michael Crabtree will reportedly get the starts at wide out for Frisco, who totally revamped their receiver corps this offseason and are apparently still working out their depth chart. Free agent acquisition Mario Manningham was also snubbed for a starting nod in favor of the two longer-tenured Niners.

Going by Jim Harbaugh’s statements on the matter, it appears Ginn is being rewarded for a solid training camp by receiving a starting nod over Moss who has himself not been getting a ton of work in practice. In other words, there’s no reason to read anything into this other than that Ginn has worked his butt off and Harbaugh wants to acknowledge it. As far as I know Moss isn’t in Harbaugh’s doghouse or anything. And anyway it’s only a preseason game. Doesn’t mean anything that Randy is no better than #3 on the receiver depth chart as of today. We know that will change by the season opener. Moss is clearly the best receiver on San Francisco even at his advanced age and coming off a one year sabbatical.

Unless of course Randy ISN”T clearly the best receiver on San Francisco. There are reports from camp that Moss has been somewhat shut out by Alex Smith who as we know is not exactly the master of the deep ball, so maybe Randy just hasn’t gotten the best chance to showcase himself there. I’m sure the lack of action won’t peck away at Moss. He’s not the kind of guy who would shut it down entirely if he thought he wasn’t getting the ball thrown to him enough.

(Uh, good luck with that Harbaugh)

Percy Harvin wants the Vikings to trade him, possibly because he’s angry about his contract, possibly because he thinks the Vikings stink and he just wants out. Whatever the reasons for Harvin’s trade request, one thing is certain: His chances of actually being traded are almost zero. Even if the Vikings could get a first for him, which they can’t, there’s no way they give up their only true playmaking wide receiver when he’s still so young, even with the migraine issues and the character flaws. That said, here’s a wholly speculative list of teams that might look to make the deal.

1. New York Jets

They just drafted Stephen Hill who could become a terrifying deep threat. Pair him with underneath man Percy Harvin and Mark Sanchez would finally have some weapons to work with. Extra bonus: Percy reunited with his college teammate Tim Tebow. What does that have to do with anything? Nothing at all. I just felt I should mention Tebow.

2. Miami Dolphins

They just signed Ochocinco, so you know they have serious wide receiver problems. Miami is in Florida which is the state Percy Harvin comes from. That makes this a natural fit. Plus, they need more drama for Hard Knocks. How about bringing in a receiver with something of a punk reputation who just forced himself out of one dysfunctional situation and into another? That would make for interesting TV, possibly.

3. Dallas Cowboys

Dez Bryant and Percy Harvin teamed up? Tony Romo might finally get to the Super Bowl with that combo. Unless he threw a bunch to the other team.

4. New England Patriots

How’s this for a load of speculative internet BS? Rick Spielman calls up Bill Belichick. Ring ring. “Hey Bill it’s Rick Spielman. So I guess you heard about this Percy Harvin situation. You’ve still got that whole on-going thing with Wes Welker as I understand. Well how about we trade our problem for yours? Harvin straight up for Welker. You get a young dynamic guy who you will certainly figure out how to use better than we ever could, and we’ll get a solid #2 receiver who won’t be anywhere near as good in our system as he was in yours but who cares as long as he’s not that punk Harvin. Sound good? Get back to me.”

5. San Francisco 49ers

The Niners have loaded up on receivers this offseason but you know they could always use one more, especially when that one more is better than the receivers they already have. And this would be great for Percy cause he’d get to play at least one year with his buddy Randy Moss. Oh yeah they’re buds. Just ask Brad Childress. Percy tried to fight Childress after he unceremoniously cut Moss in 2010. So they’re tight. Hell, this is probably what Harvin is trying to swing. He’s probably already slipped Trent Baalke’s phone number under Rick Spielman’s door. Sneaky.
