The LaDainian Tomlinson watch can now end. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the free agent running back has spurned the Vikings and signed a contract with the New York Jets.

The Vikes courted Tomlinson late last week, hoping he could step into the third-down back role vacated by Chester Taylor. Tomlinson left Minnesota without a deal, and flew to New York to meet with crazy Rex Ryan and the gang.

Whatever Rex Ryan said, and whatever money the Jets offered, it was all more to L.T.’s liking than the Vikings’ efforts.

And this leaves the Vikes still searching for someone to replace Chester Taylor. It’s looking more-and-more like that replacement will have to come from within the organization – Albert Young is the only likely candidate – or via the draft.

I wonder how That Guy feels about the team’s failure to secure LT. Maybe he won’t want to leave Mississippi now.

Thanks to a number of last-minute salary-dump moves, the wide receiver market has suddenly become flooded with guys who may or may not be of interest to a team like the Vikings. The Buccaneers got the madness started today by saying goodbye to five veterans, including receivers Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard, neither of whom made much impact in 2008. The Rams, who figure to be dumping quite a few familiar names themselves, then got in on the act by jettisoning Drew Bennett, who signed a big free agent deal with them two years ago and ended up catching just 34 balls, only 1 in an injury-marred 2008. And then the biggest name of all shook loose: Just a short time ago, the Jets announced that they have parted ways – again – with Laveranues Coles, who had 70 catches and 7 touchdowns last year with Brett Favre throwing to him. Coles was reportedly dumped because new coach Rex Ryan has instituted an iron-clad policy of not negotiating new deals with players who are under contract. In other words, if you plan on being a pain in Rex Ryan’s ass, Rex Ryan will yank you from his ass like a splinter and toss you into the street. Unless later on you decide to come back at a more reasonable price – then he’ll dig you.

Coles would be a great guy for the Vikes to sign up. He had good chemistry with Favre last year, which will come in handy after the Vikes and Favre complete their secret plan to make the Jets cut him so they can sign him and have him lead them to the Super Bowl – while riding a unicorn.

Nobody seems to know what the St. Louis Rams intend doing with their head coaching position. There was a report yesterday from Adam Schefter that the Rams had settled on Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and were just waiting to announce it, but today Chris Mortensen aka Al Davis‘s Favorite Reporter is saying it’s between Jason Garrett and Rex Ryan (via Ramblin’ Fan). It’s not often you see different insiders putting out different reports like this. Maybe it’s all disinformation intended to disguise the team’s real intentions. The only thing we know for certain is that Jim Haslett will not be back. Now Haslett has been bumped to the front of the line as a candidate to replace fired Packers defensive coordinator Bob Sanders, by virtue of his having worked with Mike McCarthy in New Orleans. And there’s still no word on the future of current Chiefs coach Herm Edwards who is considered a strong candidate to replace Frazier should he move on to greener pastures. I wish the Rams would just make up their damn minds already…it’s not like it matters who coaches that sorry-ass team.
