I have no idea who the Vikings’ fifth wide receiver will be but I do know who it won’t be: Dominique Johnson. Today the Vikings waived the UDFA out of Cal Poly, temporarily (or perhaps permanently) derailing his NFL dreams. Tom Pelissero says Johnson had a rough camp and I’ll have to take his word for it, as I did not pay one bit of attention to him (Pelissero may not have either, judging by his misspelling of Johnson’s name in his tweets).

Johnson’s departure opened up a roster spot which the Vikings quickly used on Kyle O’Donnell, a UDFA linebacker out of Liberty who was cut a couple weeks ago by the Redskins. I’m assuming O’Donnell’s addition is related to the injuries suffered by linebackers Ross Homan and Mark Washington. The Vikes have a game to play Saturday night and don’t want to run out of scrub linebackers to run out there in the fourth quarter.

Yet another Viking could be on his way to the Pacific Northwest. According to John Clayton there are currently four teams in on free agent linebacker Ben Leber, one being the Seahawks who already this off-season have signed Sidney Rice and Tarvaris Jackson. The other three teams aren’t identified by Clayton but the way things have been going, one of them is probably the Eagles.

Chances of the Vikings re-signing Leber have been viewed as slim for most of the off-season, and with the Vikings still scrambling to get under the salary cap, those chances are probably down to less than slim. Erin Henderson is seen as the front-runner to replace Leber but reportedly Jasper Brinkley, who I always thought of as more of a middle linebacker, has been getting work on the weak side as well. Rookie Ross Homan is possibly in the mix also.
