You no longer have to worry about how Ryan Cook will feed his family. Two days after being cut by the Vikings, the offensive tackle has signed on with the Miami Dolphins, who had a hole on the O-line after cutting center Joe Berger. One man’s misfortune is another’s good luck, or something like that.

Cook was originally drafted by the Vikings in 2006 in the second round – using a pick acquired from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for Daunte Culpepper. And now Cook himself has gone to the Dolphins. Cosmic.

After five up-and-down seasons with the Vikings, including a number of starts at tackle and guard, Cook became a free agent in 2010. No one was surprised when the Vikings brought Cook back during camp on a two-year deal – he is a decent swing man after all. Many were surprised when Cook was left off the 53-man roster on Saturday. But as we see, Cook was not unemployed for long, so it’s all good.

The salary cap was a big factor in the Vikings‘ decision-making over the weekend. Heath Farwell, Jeff Dugan and Ryan Cook were waived to save money, and in another cap-relief move, Greg Camarillo was convinced to reduce his $1.7 million salary for 2011.

I say “convinced” somewhat facetiously of course. Had Cam not taken the pay cut he would’ve just been released, and there’s a good possibility no one else would’ve picked him up. There are probably lots of fans who wish Camarillo had simply been shown the door, especially those who are disappointed Manny Arceneaux ended up on the practice squad instead of the roster.

Camarillo is currently no better than 4th on the receiver depth chart. Fellow wide-out Bernard Berrian also took a pay-cut this offseason as the Vikings scrambled to get under the cap.

The Vikings may have won Saturday night’s preseason tilt with Seattle, but the victory came at a pretty high cost. Today Leslie Frazier revealed that guard Scott Kooistra suffered a jammed neck during the game, an injury severe enough that Kooistra has still not been able to leave Seattle. The Vikings have been forced to place Kooistra on IR, ending his season. The move freed up a roster spot which the Vikings have already filled by signing DE Stylez White.

Saturday night’s game was Kooistra’s first start of the preaseason and his last (and probably his last action ever in purple). It had been hoped that he might figure into the right guard mix with Chris DeGeare – who has actually been getting reps at right tackle lately – and Anthony Herrera, who is still coming back from a knee injury, but obviously the Vikings will now have to look elsewhere for offensive line depth. They still have Ryan Cook, who is a solid enough vet though a tad penalty-prone.

Just when you thought the offensive line couldn’t be any more of a mess…
