Most Viking fans were over-the-rainbow with happiness when Brad Childress got fired as head coach after starting the 2010 season 3-7. It’s a safe bet Miami Dolphins fans are not experiencing an equal sense of jubilation at the news that Childress will be interviewed on Saturday for that team’s vacant offensive coordinator position.

Then again, maybe Dolphin fans like the idea of bringing in an OC who is known for favoring a grinding, run-first brand of the ancient West Coast over anything remotely resembling a 21st century offense?

Childress himself broke the news of his impending interview to the Star Tribune. “I don’t have any preconceived notions,” Childress said. “If there’s a good opportunity there with good people, and that’s the key, I’ll coach again this year. If not then I’ll pass and do something next year.”

Under Childress, the Vikings became a top defensive team – largely thanks to the hiring of Mike Tomlin and then Leslie Frazier as defensive coordinator – and an adequate, rather boring offensive one. But that all changed in 2009 when the addition of Brett Favre and the emergences of Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin transformed the tedious Chillyball operation into a dynamic TD-scoring machine.

Things took a big step backward in 2010 though, thanks to a combination of factors including Brett Favre’s drop-off, Rice’s injury, the disintegration of the offensive line and Childress’ inability to compensate for these problems either through personnel moves or game plan tweaks. Chilly’s woeful inadequacy in the face of disaster – plus that whole mess with Randy Moss – prompted Zygi Wilf to can him ten games into the season and replace him with Leslie Frazier who has since been given the full-time head coaching job.

My only advice to Tony Sparano and the Dolphins? If you do hire Childress, don’t let him call the plays. Ask Andy Reid and Brett Favre why.

With Brad Childress now fired, speculation will naturally turn to what big names Zygi Wilf may try to draw to Minnesota to help right the ship. The first towering NFL figure drawing attention is Bill Parcells, the Hall-of-Fame coach who was last seen turning around the Miami Dolphins organization.

The Parcells name comes up for two reasons: 1) Parcells has expressed interest in taking one last job before calling it a career, not as a coach but in the same guru capacity he enjoyed in Miami; and, 2) Zygi Wilf is a life-long Giants fan who worships former Giants coach Parcells as a football god.

Clearly, the Vikings are an organization that could use an overhaul, and Parcells has shown himself adept at pulling off such massive top-to-bottom make-overs. The question is, would Parcells consider rebuilding the Vikings a challenge worthy of his talents, or does he look at Minnesota as a football backwater that has no shot at ever winning a title?

The big bummer, from the point-of-view of someone like Parcells, is the stadium situation. The Vikings are stuck in the Metrodome for one more year, and after that the waters become very, very murky. Parcells may look at the uncertainty surrounding the stadium, and the possibility of the whole franchise being moved after 2011, and decide he wants no part of such a mess.

On the other hand, the Vikings do have one thing that might be very attractive to Parcells: Core offensive talent to build around. We know Brett Favre will be gone after 2010, but Adrian Peterson and Percy Harvin will still be here, as will Visanthe Shiancoe and possibly Sidney Rice. Parcells may look at the roster of skill players and realize that, if he can just swing a deal for a halfway decent quarterback, the team will be pretty competitive right away, and then it will be a matter of drafting well, and making sure the cupboard isn’t bare for future seasons (something Brad Childress failed in, at least when it came to the quarterback situation).

But even before dealing with personnel issues, Parcells would have the task of putting a front office and coaching staff in place. In Miami, Parcells brought in people he was familiar with from past jobs, like head coach Tony Sparano, who served under him in Dallas. We can reasonably assume then that Parcells would look to his past assistants/players as candidates for key positions. What this might mean for interim head coach Leslie Frazier, a respected guy who has no history with Parcells, is hard to say for certain. It’s likely that Parcells would want to wipe the slate clean, which would mean the end for most if not all of the existing Vikings staff.

The one immediate effect of a Parcells hire would be to re-energize the fanbase – a fanbase Wilf will need to mobilize in a big way if he wants to secure a new stadium. The firing of Childress will likely have a short-term positive effect on fan enthusiasm, but after awhile, something else good will have to happen. I imagine most fans would look at the arrival of Parcells as a step in the right direction for a franchise that, after a burst of success under Chilly, now looks as rudderless as it did during the darkest days of the Red McCombs-Mike Tice era.

Brian Miller of Phin Phanatic was kind enough to trade five questions with The Viking Age as part of this week’s Dolphins coverage. Brian and I discussed former Dolphin Greg Camarillo, the Wildcat, quarterback Chad Henne and the state of Miami’s defense…

Q: Vikings fans are hoping for a lot from former Dolphin Greg Camarillo (mostly because our other receivers are all hurt or just suck). What’s your assessment of him?

A: Greg Camarillo is the Brett Favre savior that he doesn’t know he has. A Wes Welker clone with better hands but a slower speed, Camarillo is every QB’s favorite target because frankly, he doesn’t drop that many balls. In fact, I can’t remember the last time he did. Brett Favre needs to use him and get out of the mindset that throwing deep is always the answer, Cams is a superb route runner and knows how to create space. When Brett Favre figures this out, the Vikings’ passing game is going to be stellar. Hopefully, he doesn’t find that out until next week.

Q: Tony Sparano said this week of the Wildcat, “I don’t think there is any surprise anymore but it is part of what we do. … I think it’s part of our identity.” Do you think it’s really a viable offense at this point?

A: Absolutely not. It is an ongoing joke among most Phin fans. The Wild Cat is a fad and that fad is over. It may be a part of their identity but that doesn’t mean it works. Oh, and it doesn’t work anymore. So if Sparano says it doesn’t surprise anyone anymore, than why run it at all?

Q: The Dolphins’ pass defense looked dominating in game 1, but that was against the Bills. How good is the pass defense really?

A: Honestly, fans are asking the same thing. Was it Buffalo or was it Mike Nolan’s schemes? The team surprised a lot of us with the play of Koa Misi at OLB and Chris Clemons at safety but we are still wondering if it’s all for real. We will get a better idea after Sunday.

Q: Is Chad Henne a quarterback who can lead the Dolphins to a Super Bowl?

A: I can stand here today and say yes. However, I don’t know if I can say that a year from now. Chad Henne is a good QB but he has a long way to go. While this is his 3rd NFL season, he only started last year after Chad Pennington got hurt. In reality, Mark Sanchez in NY has more starting experience at this level than Henne does. Henne, to me, needs to stop second guessing himself. He tends to play faster than the game and he needs to slow down and play at the same speed. He often checks down far too quickly and makes his reads on a simple 6 second countdown and that won’t work in real games.

Q: Miami’s defense is a bit banged up. How do you see them doing against Adrian Peterson who seems extra-motivated this year?

A: Miami will approach AP the same way the approach everyone. They will try and contain the outside and move him back inside where the linebackers can make plays. How well this succeeds will depend on what defense Miami really has. They are good at stopping the run, but if they fall too far behind they will start to take unnecessary risks and then AP will explode on them.
